This is the most BEAUTIFUL graphic novel I've ever seen in my fuckin life holy fuck.

Look at the cover art. Look at all the detail in the cover. Well, the quality of the art in the ENTIRE series looks exactly like the cover. Every single panel is like that cover.

Every single panel is a stunning piece of art. I'm still trying to wrap my brain around it. Pick any panel, any single panel, and I'd be like, I could never in a million years make something as fucking pretty as this ONE panel. It's insane. The details, the colour palette, the lighting. My brain still cannot comprehend it. I had to literally force myself to remember that there was a story to read because I would just zoom in to every single panel and just stare and study it like a painting in a museum. I was never going to finish this at that rate. lol

I really enjoyed the story too. This series gets a bit dark (that cat on the cover is not fucking around). Sure, I didn't love that that the main characters did come across a decent amount of good luck to help them survive some dangerous moments. And I would have also liked to know more about the characters and maybe have more of a personal journey and character development for them. But honestly those are such minor nitpicks. I really enjoyed reading this and I can not stress that this is 100% worth reading even just for the beautiful art.

There are all kinds of animals in this too and I was just blown away by the beautiful details in every single creature. Mega bonus points to the moose because I lurve moose and that was one FANTASTIC moose.

When I began reading this graphic novel, I wasn't really a big fan of it. It seemed like a cliche middle grade story, but as I kept reading it, it seemed to have grown on me. I wouldn't recommend to anyone right away, but this was an enjoyable read.

I watched OSP’s trope talk ‘Small Mammal In a Big World’ and Red briefly discussed Scurry so I decided to buy it for myself.

It was pretty good, kind of reminded me of Erin Hunter’s ‘Survivors’ series (that I still need to finish😅) except it’s about dogs after an apocalypse (plus they don’t know human words for things lol). Also getting it for the art alone is so worth it. Mac Smith’s artwork is gorgeous!!

One of the most gorgeous graphic novels I have ever read.  I personally enjoyed the story, but for a book marketed as middle grade I would say its a bit intense.  Still a really fun read!

Craft - the art of fucking gorgeous and does a great job of capturing the characters as well as the world. The writing is very solid as well.

Characters - the rodents are fun. While a number of the characters fall into certain archetypes seeing those archetypes as cute little animals (or big scary ones) is pretty fun and interesting.

Conflict - the plot itself is standard but is underlaid by the fact that you are seeing this through the eyes of small animals who don’t have an understanding for what has happened we and what humans have done, which adds dramatic irony and tension which work well throughout the story

Context - because if the dramatic irony the rules of the world become very interesting. I think my favorite part was the Possum’s story and the explanation of disaster from an animal’s eye, which really highlighted the spiritual aspect of this society which I found fascinating

A little mouse named Wix is scouting through an abandoned human neighborhood, looking for food for his colony of mice. Back home at the colony, Pict cares for her ailing father, and worries that some of the mice might be planning some kind of betrayal against the council. While Wix faces danger outside from cats and other predators, Pict wonders if there is also danger from within the colony.

I really loved the setting and world-building in this graphic novel. The mice are trying to figure out why all the humans are gone. Did they all die? Are they coming back? The mice are used to scrounging for food in human houses, not in the wild. Some mice think they should move to the city, instead of the deserted suburbs. Others think they should try to survive in the woods, eating roots and berries. Not only is there a history of the human world to be discovered, but there is also a heritage and history among the animals. They have their own legends and hierarchy among the mice and rats and among other species too.

The art work is really beautiful and colorful! The designs of the animals are excellent, and they retain their wildness while also being anthropomorphized enough that the reader can relate to them.

I really liked the characters of Wix and Pict. They go on such different journeys, but in the end they are determined to do whatever it takes to help their colony. They each have character development to gain confidence and wisdom. Along the way, they make friends and find allies to help them fight their enemies, but in the end they must stand in their own strength.

The only part I didn't like was when they had to fight a snake, because I'm scared of snakes. I skipped that part. Too scary for me!

There is a lot of violence and death and blood, but it wasn't too horribly gross.
