So much fun! I’ve always loved the movie and I’m actively watching the animated show, so I knew I had to complete the trifecta and start reading the series. The story holds up, and is just generally charming. While I think the show/movie hold up better in the fighting department, the story of the novel is so much more in depth and character-driven.
Edit 5-16: new rating is 8.5/10
I'm thinking 8/10 for this one. It was lots of fun and really silly and cute and I love the characters. Also, it's so meta and ironic, which I love. It's definitely not the most outstanding, amazing, mind-blowing book I've ever read, but it hit right in that sweet spot of things that I personally really love, including the humor, music, and how hipster these characters are. That's why I gave it 4/5, but a low 4/5: it's something I personally really enjoyed, but I don't think it's a masterpiece or anything. Will definitely be continuing the series.

The second time through, still a lot of fun to read and I highly recommend the colorized version.
The story begins with a girl and ends with a girl. But the girl is not the same. During this 6 Issues we accompany Scott Pilgrim and his friends through one year of their life.
I wondered, while reading, why it’s so good until it hit me. It’s like real life, life changes especially after high school and O’Malley really managed to make the characters and the story real and believable. Scott Pilgrim is known as the best fighter in town, but he’s not a celebrity nor special. He has no job, lives with a friend in a one room apartment, is always broke and can’t get his life together. And with the appearance of Ramona he starts to get his life together. Ramona and fighting her Ex romances throws Scott out of his normal daily grind and forces him to change and over think his path so far. During that he and Ramona has to face the past with the good thinks and the mistakes.
This whole setup is spiced with video game humour. Every time Scott wins a fight and instead of a dead body, there lie coins, for example. The principles of the world are like in beat ‘em up games. But this is only of importance if someone fights, the references are not a dominant part of the story. Also O’Malley managed to end slow story parts right by the time they become boring.
In my opinion the story laks video game references, but the it would easily survive without it and that’s what should matter.
