4 stars. Fun little high octane ride of a novella, that takes vampires and puts them in an atypical setting, very similar to [b:30 Days of Night|289294|30 Days of Night |Tim Lebbon|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1348276370s/289294.jpg|280670] or, one of my favourite vampire movies of all time, Kathryn Bigelow's most exceptionally awesome vampire-western classic Near Dark.

Ryker has a great ear for dialogue, and the characters here really work in the setting. This is a fantastic modern horror western with a great protagonist who is just enough anti-hero to pull me in and make it work. For 2.99 in Amazon's kindle store I'd recommend this to any non sparkly vampire fans, totally worth the money.

This was great!!! The end had me squirming with the descriptions of all the blood drinking (that's not a spoiler, it's a book about vampires, obviously there's blood drinking.) but it was actually the perfect ending.

Loved!!!!!

Super impressed!

If you are looking for sparkly vamps, you won't find them here!

Ryker has written a vampire story where the vamps are smelly, underground-dwelling, desperate, cow's-blood-drinkers. Keith Harris, the main character is tough as nails and the story ends up being a quick, but fulfilling vampire story.

This a very short book and it didn't have to be. The premise of the not cuddly vampire is a good one and I prefer it so that was good. However the story felt rushed if the author had taken a bit more time with thr story and development I would have been a much happier reader. The characters were eh take them or leave them no strong connections at all. They lacked feeling and depth just all very superficial. maybe the writing gets better in the next book I'm not sure I'm going to try and find out.

Throw some dirty, stinking vampires into a small Kansas town filled with meth-heads and bad-ass cowboys and you get an original, dark, and gory horror story. Very fun read.

This is a very different kind of vampire book. These are by no means your father's vampires. The vamps are fast, insane and for the most part, stupid.
Keith is a relatively new widower who is still grieving. He is also a very angry guy; he is alienating everyone else in his life. Keith's brother and niece are trying to keep an eye on him, but his drinking and his temper are getting out of control.
Keith is trying to keep his cattle ranch going during all this, but now something is attacking the cattle.
It's hard to go much further without any spoilers so I will just say I thought it was excellent and I've immediately begun the second book/novella in the series.

I've read a couple of vampire westerns in my day and this is sadly the weakest of the lot. There's some really clever writing in places - I'm a particular fan of "'But you strode in here jingle-jangling like you were going to settle some foolishness'" because that's pretty killer; also the exchange:

"'Sure, but you have to come up with a name. I've never been good at that.'
'How about "the vampire?"'
'Well, I guess I could've come up with that.'"

Unfortunately, by the end of the book, the many glaring editing errors had me clutching my head & none of the characters had become more to me than their names.

If you've come upon this story expecting a romanticized, pretty version of the vampire, move along. This is horror, gritty and bloody. It's also very good.
The western flair of the Midwest setting gives the horror vampire an entirely new feel. No castles and black velvet here. The hero, Keith, is a cowboy. He's tough in the way all good cowboys are, and has troubles aplenty.
The story moves fast, and if I have any complaint, it's that it ended too quickly. A good read, worth the time of any horror lover.
