A beautiful Australian story of young love and loss. A town full of secrets that it buries to show a front of perfection and beauty, but one that cracks easily until it’s all in the open. Silvey does a wonderful job of putting coming of age and comprehending the harsh reality of the world into words.

Beautiful prose - descriptive without excessive flourish (something I struggle with in modern literary fiction), excellent building of tension, compassionate and well rounded characters. Really enjoyed the way in which Charlie slowly began to learn about prejudice and racism, and the way this was portrayed through the actions of others, Jasper Jones and self reflection. I did think the banter between Jeffrey and Charlie was a bit much at times, so I have detracted half a star, also feel like it probably could've done without the final chapter - the second last chapter seemed like a nice ending point. Overall, really enjoying digging into modern Australian fiction and finding some gems!

While there is a mystery here, most of this book is the tale of a small town during the time of the Vietnam War and the bigotry and lies it harbored. It is the coming of age story of a young boy and the tragedy of young love.  The characters were fantastically drawn. A young, exuberant cricket star who watched his parents suffer from racism and small mindedness. A young girl with secrets which could turn her heart. A young man, always on the outskirts of society, tired of being the scapegoat and reeling from the loss of his best friend. Unhappy mothers, fathers who are distant, and a tumultuous time period. The plot only thickens when a young girl goes missing.

I read this 3-4 years ago and I really wanted to re-read it. It is definitely on my list of favourite books. I would give it 5 stars for the writing style alone, it's definitely not for everyone, but I really vibe with it. I had to knock the rating down a bit solely for the pages of cricket description because, despite being Australian, I have no clue how cricket works and it only ever seems boring.

I liked Charlie’s reflections on life, and the twists he and Jasper encountered as they looked for answers.
