Zwangsprostitutions- und Traumaporno im YA-Stil erzählt. (Mit Porno meine ich nicht Sexszenen, die gibt es gar nicht, sondern das Suhlen im SCHAUT! SO FURCHTBAR IST ES! HIER NOCH VIEL MEHR DETAILS!). Außerdem wird bei jeder Gelegenheit darauf hingewiesen,  dass die Protagonistin ja gebildete Arzttochter ist und deshalb alles besonders schlimm für sie ist. Eine Weile dachte ich noch "am Ende bricht der Vulkan aus" (das Buch spielt in Pompeji), "das wird mich für alles entschädigen", aber als ich erfahren habe, dass der Vulkan gar nicht ausbricht, habe ich bei 80% aufgehört. 

Naheliegender Einwand: "Aber Kathrin, bei 'Glorious Exploits' von Ferdia Lennon ist alles genauso: schlampig konstruierte Vergangenheitskulisse, Gewalt, Gegenwartssprache, nur mit Männern und Tätern in den Hauptrollen, und da hast du vier Sterne vergeben", ja. Vielleicht liegt es nur an der Perspektive.

I think my enjoyment of the book was more like a 3/5 but the story and characters were very well written, I just didn’t click with them in ways I have with other books. One of those books where I think you’d pick up a lot of extra details on a reread.

started to read this the day after I did a guided tour of pompeii and saw the ruins of one of the homes of so-called “she wolves”

I kept having to force myself to get through it. The writing was fine, I just never got that attached to the characters despite it being a fairly character driven book. The occasional modern dialogue also startled me.

A great historical fiction with a good MC that has a clear goal. My only problem is the status of a particular side character at the end of the book. Other than that, an enjoyable read. Might read the second book, but I also might not
