this had a fascinating world but I can't stand the characters

I'll be honest, I didn't have particularly high hopes for this book. There is a lot of mediocrity in this sub-genre, but I was in a mood, so I decided to take a chance and was really impressed.

Now, hard to say if my positive impressions are inflated due to my seriously low expectations, but I actually really enjoyed this book and immediately bought and read the second. The world-building was interesting, but not so different/complex as to require a lot of over-explanation. The characters were complex and I really loved all the relationships here. Kyle and Jamie were seriously freaking hot together, and honestly, I was just really drawn in.

A couple of minors things stood out, but nothing that really detracted from my enjoyment.

Re-read: I was in the mood for military mm so I decided to read through this series again. My thoughts are pretty spot on from the first time: I love the team dynamic, the spice was hot (but honestly was sometimes too long. I started to actually get bored with it!), and I want more. I still hate the "hiding" trope, but I want to get to Alexi's books so I'm pushing through.

I dip my toe into sci-fi only occasionally, but with the sci-fi being mostly surrounding meta-humans, I knew I had to give it a try. Military-esque books can sometimes be a hard sell for me as a military spouse, especially when set in DC, but this one did just fine in that regard thankfully.

My quick review is that for the most part I enjoyed this! It sometimes felt bogged down with technicalities, but that's pretty normal for sci-fi. There was some insta lust and obsession going on pretty much from their first meeting which sometimes felt a little too much; being together could have some big ramifications, after all. The spicy scenes were hoooooot, if sometimes a little repetitive. I'm a sucker for a dominant man in the bedroom, and although Kyle in the bedroom vs Kyle in work-mode were different enough to feel kind of jarring, it mostly worked. I didn't think they had enough time to really connect emotionally as much as they did sexually so I'm glad no ILYs were exchanged, though it was a close thing.

I definitely want to check out the next in the series.

I really enjoyed this. I liked the characters, I want to get to know the rest of the team better, but I loved their dynamics, especially Katie and Jamie. Kyle was adorable and I loved him and Alexi.
This was yummy. Adored the sex scenes and not just because of "sex!" , but because they actually added something. It was what both of them were looking for but hadn't been able to find with anyone else. I did feel that things developed pretty quickly for them
Spoiler though I was glad they weren't all 'I love you' after two dates, they moved in together quite quickly, but with Kyle needing to relocate anyway, it was fast but didn't really bother me.
More than just physically, I liked that they understood what the other needed and how their lives worked, mission first, dedication to the job, even when it put your life on the line. I am interested to see where this series goes and will continue.

I really enjoyed this. It was a great first book, it did really good in introducing the world and the people within it. I do wish that Kyle and Jamie had more development in their relationship outside of sex, though I did enjoy the sex scenes.

DID NOT FINISH: 61%

DNF @ 61%
While the blurb sounded promising, I feel the execution fell short

- The writing style is too descriptive and not really engaging
- Insta-lust; 60% in and romance not in sight (though we were told they talked about everything, the fact that we didn't see any of those talks left me indifferent toward the couple)
- As Elena noticed, the fact that Alexei's English was broken to such an extent despite the fact he's been living in the USA and hanging out with native kids since he was a child doesn't seem logical and it really bothered me
- The sex scenes were way too long and I couldn't really feel the heat. The first one put me to sleep twice. The others I skimmed.

I decided to DNF when I caught myself skimming the second mission. It seemed like I wanted to skim everything, and reading lost its purpose.

3.5 stars rounded up. This is an audio review.

I probably wouldn’t have made it through this book if I had been reading it. I really enjoy Greg and he just does a fabulous job. The premise of this series is fascinating and while I did enjoy it, I felt like there was a lot missing. The sex was

More relationship focused than I generally like, with several super long sex scenes. Interesting plot, tho.

I like the metahuman plot but don't really feel a connection to the couple or the side characters.
