3.6
I would give this a 3.6 stars if I could. I like the Jane Yellowrock series quite a lot, and this new offshoot from that looks to add quite a bit to that world. I look forward to seeing more of Nell Ingram.

My productivity takes a dive whenever I pick up a Faith Hunter book. This spinoff from the Yellowrock series was completely diverting for me, with a nearly new cast of characters and different abilities.
Really enjoyed as it crosses/combines several of my favorite genre.
I think I once started this and didn't continue, for no justified reason.
I'm glad I rediscovered it. This is set within Jane Yellowrock's universe, but is not centred on vampires. I don't like reading about vampires, so it works out very well.
The main character's powers are unique. I've never read anything like it. This first novel is particularly good because it focuses on her relationship with the cult church she was born into and narrowly escaped, as well as the family she left behind within it. The later entries in this series read more like police/crime/procedurals and can be monotonous or exhausting. This is also less grotesque. There is violence but it isn't drawn out.
All in all, it's very intriguing and new in many ways to me. I've been binging urban fantasy as a genre, and this one really stands out as one of the greats.

Amazing story set tangentially to the Jane Yellowrock series. A bit darker but totally engrossing. More, please!!
Wow - that was great
To me this book had way more substance than the Yellowrock books.
Especially the main character had tons of interesting stuff going on. I really liked the focus on family. The book is rather hardcore
Trigger alert: Rape, child abuse, and sexual child abuse

So from reading other reviews I think I'm on lonely island with not really enjoying this one. I do like the Jane Yellowrock series but haven't really kept up with the short stories set in that world so this was my introduction to Nell. I'm going to say that while the narrator was excellent I think I would have been better off reading this one as a book instead of on audio. I felt it moved incredibly slow. It was like all those Sookie Stackhouse books (which I enjoyed overall) where there's just pages and pages of her doing laundry or whatnot around the house. We get that amplified her, I must have heard about how Nell lived off the grid and what she had to do for hot water 100 times (or at least it felt like it). So if I were reading that, I could pick up the pace there, harder to do in an audiobook. (Yes, I know you can change the speed - it always sounds wonky to me).
The other issue was Nell herself. I thought her powers were pretty cool and I liked her interaction with the PsyLed team. However, to be perfectly honest, I didn't enjoy being in her head. I don't particularly enjoy southern US culture and her POV is steeped in a certain part of it. Also, all the stuff about the church and her family. By the end* we're supposed to think they're heroes because that finally decided that that's enough rape and abuse and pedophilia? How much rape and abuse and pedophilia was acceptable then? It's 2017, I'm supposed to think you deserve some sort of medal for "allowing" the girls to go to school now?
So, I'm not sure if I'll continue with this series. If I do, I'll certainly pick up the book rather than audio so I can just skim the parts that don't involve the PsyLed team. And I'll certainly wish it was from one of the other team members POV than Nell's. Unlike a lot of Jane Yellowrock readers, I don't hate Rick. Jane/Bruiser was always my ship so anything that got Rick out of the way of that was OK by me. Honestly, I'd rather have his POV. Anyway, if I keep reading it will be to keep up with Jane's world and the PsyLed team. But I'm not sure if I can suck it up enough to be in Nell's head again to do that.
*If you read the spoiler the answer to the second question is "none".
