Good book.... you know me and my love of true survival stories. However, this is one of those rare books that I feel like I would like better in movie form.

Eh. Nothing groundbreaking or exciting. I can sum it up in one sentence: Woman and fiancee get on boat, hurricane comes and kills fiancee, woman survives. End story.

I think the events are amazing and inspirational but I wish someone else had written her story. The writing didnt draw me in the way I would've liked.

The storyline has the premise to make an exciting book. A man and a woman, Richard and Tami, young and in love, decide to take a job delivering a boat from Tahiti to San Diego. For many days they enjoy good weather and sailing conditions until Hurricane Raymond enters the scene. Despite Richard's attempts to avoid the hurricane, it funnels right toward them. In a dark and terrifying night, Richard lashes himself to the cockpit and orders Tami below. She hears him shout, and then all goes dark. When she wakes up, the seas are calm, and Richard is no where to be found.

This should be a good, page turner, right? I was expecting to read something along the lines of Krakauer's Into Thin Air, but no, it was nothing like that.

There were so many problems with this book. I felt like I never really got to know Richard and Tami. The storyline was poorly organized. The storyline would be about the crash, but then abruptly switch to some memory Tami has about Richard and their time together in the past.

Tami is at sea alone for many weeks, but I didn't feel the sense of despair and urgency she must have felt. I mean it's there, but somehow it just came across as whining.

There was great potential for this book, but it failed miserably to live up to it.

This story is so amazing and so unbelievably emotional. It's truly amazing and I loved reading it so much. It's a great book to read just on a couple of days or 5/6 hours.

I also watched the movie and it goes pretty good along with the book. That's what I live if that happens with a movie. When a movie just goes along with the book. Except the whole Richard is dead thing. In the book he's just gone... In the movie Tami 'Finds" him but when she sees land. Richard is just gone, first I didn't really understand it... But later on I understood it and it got me like really emotional and I think that was really beautiful.

So overall it's an amazing book to just read in a short time.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Both Sam Claflin and Shailene Woodley hold a special place in my heart and the movie simply enhanced my love for them. The story is incredible and heart wrenching and one of the most effective films I’ve ever seen... The first time I watched it I woke up the next morning crying. The story in its entirety captures the rarity of true love and honestly gives me hope that such a thing actually exists. I did find the book a bit disappointing but it wasn’t quite as organized as the movie but that is to be expected as the author is less of an author and more of a survivor. However, I have much respect for the publishing of this book as the author dedicated it to Richard himself.

Expected more survival story and less romance flashbacks.

Somewhere between 2 and 3 stars. Yes, I agree with other reviewers that it becomes a little dicey when you're "rating" someone's true life experience. Survivor stories are always inspiring and I feel motivated by reading about their grit and will to survive. That being said, not all survivors are writers and so the writing can be a bit choppy and disjointed when told in book form. I think as a motivational speaker, this would be an amazing story of courage and resilience but I didn't love reading the book. This rating is based on the book, NOT the experiences of these 2 young lovers. Still looking forward to watching the movie and being on the big, blue ocean with them :)

Heart breaking story of lost love and survival. Short and sweet, well written. Will have to watch the movie and compare.
