i definitely enjoyed this more the second time around !!
i think my first read was pretty recently after reading Vampire Academy and since it’s obvious that this book has many similarities i probably just didn’t feel the need to continue on with the series. especially at the beginning of the book it’s almost hard to seperate the two with how similar they are but thankfully the story takes a different turn and i enjoyed where this story differed from VA !!
most of the characters were great but i did find that i struggled with the MC and being in her head at times, she makes quite a few slut shaming comments as well as being very impulsive and irrational at times but as someone who can be very impulsive i find it a bit hypocritical of me to judge !! either way regardless of it’s flaws i still had lots of fun and am eager to get to the rest of the series !!

This is a reread. I read it the first time back in 2016 and enjoyed it, but felt it was too similar to Vampire Academy (true) and never finished the series. Giving it another shot while they’re still free on audible, plus I own them all so might as well lol

It’s an entertaining read but the dialogue drives me crazy. Throwing in “like”, “so,” and “totally” doesn’t feel authentic, teens don’t really talk like that.

My biggest issue is that Alex sounds very whiney way too often.
I am enjoying this story. I like the twist of the demons being the essence drainers of the pures. I’m used reading about vampires and humans so this is a nice change up. I like Jennifer’s writing. It’s easy to follow and enjoy the storyline.

All the reviews calling this a VA ripoff piqued my interest since I loved that series. I did see several similarities but time will tell if it's just the first book or the entire series. The FMC was overly cocky which was a little annoying but loved her no nonsense attitude when slighted and banter with people. The chemistry between her and her friends as well as the love interests is nice. I enjoyed the book and look forward to seeing where the story goes. Definitely checking out the next book.
