The FMC annoyed be in the beginning because she was arrogant and cocky, and I get based on her history and background. So it was nice to see some growth in her character. The banter and quips had me laughing, gasping, and smirking. There's world-building throughout the book so it's nice that it's spread out instead of giving you it all to you in the beginning. The book is easy to follow and get into, especially if you like Greek Mythology. It's like Percy Jackson only about the lesser known offsprings from the Demi-gods and humans. I really enjoy the lore the author added to the book and the way she tells it makes it believable. My brain is already trying to get what the other books are about based on the title.
Wasn't doing it for me. Very YA in the ways I'm not a fan of.
Also the audiobook narrator sounded like she was so done with life. I'm not sure if that was intentional to portray the FMC or just how she sounds.

It's probably a good thing I didn't read the reviews here before I went and got the book, otherwise I would have stayed away.
I respect authors a lot for writing a book; it takes hard work, dedication and imagination to create a new world; but here's the thing: Armentrout didn't create this world.
I've never finished the Vampire Academy series because I didn't like it - but even with just having read half of the first book I could tell that this was a blatant rip-off and that is NOT ok.
The first book I read of Armentrout was her new Dark Element series and I actually really liked it. But then I started Half Blood and it was just like reading the same book with different species but the concept is exactly the same: there are half bloods, pures or full blooded Wardens and being together can't be. Same principal. So basically after Armentrout had some success with her Covenant series she repeated the exact same thing and that truly annoys me.
And interestingly enough the similarities to the VA series didn't really appear to me while reading the Dark Element series, here however it was impossible to miss it. And this just annoys me. I don't like to support authors who take someone elses work, change some names and locations and then call it their own. That's just wrong and actually IS illegal. How this book could get published just like that is beyond me.

While I liked the book, I honestly thought I was having déjà vu with Vampire Academy. Alex’s story fits the mold that Richelle Mead made:
-Alex is a fighter descended from a pure-blood but mixed with a mortal. Her people are considered the less worthy only good to protect the pure.
-The story starts off with her out on her own (with her mom), running away from the school she belongs in.
-She digs her teacher
-etcetera
But even with all those similarities I still liked the book. I liked Alex. She does stupid, reckless stuff but I think she has a good heart. I also liked Aiden. When I read about him I thought to myself, “Finally! A non-asshole love interest!” I know that Seth becomes a part of a love triangle later on but I couldn’t stand him at all until the last five pages. I hate it when skilled authors can do that to you. :D
I’m going to continue trucking along especially since I’m in a readathon for this but truthfully I probably would have stopped after this in in other circumstance because if I wanted to read Vampire Academy I would have just grabbed it to read instead of a slightly different rehashing.

Absolutely loved this book. From the first pages Jennifer and Alex both had me completely drawn in by what was happening. I love Alex she's so funny and strong and such a great character to read about. Never the less her life sucks.
The beginning of the book she is being chased by Daimon's which are pretty much dead rotting Pure Bloods who like to feed off of aether or Half-Blood and Pure life energy. The followed her from Florida after she fled when she found her dead mother on the floor. Finally thinking she's going to die help comes in the form of Aiden St. Cloud. The hot Pure that Alex has had a crush on since the first moment she saw him all those years ago at the Covenant. After dispatching the daimon's they take Alex back to the Covenant where she has a less than warm welcoming.
Her uncle is now what we could call a principle. His name is Marcus and he wants nothing more than to give Alex the Elixir and send her to her step fathers house to become a servant. However, as fate should have it Aiden steps in and says his train her so she can be caught up by the time summer is over in three months. Alex much obey the rules and not get into any large amounts of trouble or else she will be put into solitude for the remainder of her life.
Back at the Covenant Alex meets up with her old best friend Caleb. I have to say I love Caleb, he's insanely hilarious and always knows how to lighten the mood up in the book when situations are looking grim. Alex also starts training which is beyond painful for her and she soon learns how far behind she is after not training for three years. As time goes by she begins to catch up and she thinks that everything will be alright. But the fates have other plans for her.
Enter Seth, the Apollyon, a half blood who can control all four elements including a fifth. He's been sent to the Covenant to watch over Lucian, but he believes it was to watch over Alex. As secrets and lies become revealed Alex soon finds out she's been lied to, and she now understands why her mother ran with her three years ago.
Overall, great awesomesauce book. I hope you pick up a copy for yourselves because this is a great book.

I found the plot incredibly intriguing—it kept me engaged from start to finish. The characters stood out as truly unique, yet they remained relatable and full of personality. Each one brought something special to the story, making it even more enjoyable. This book definitely didn’t disappoint! I’m so excited to read more from Jennifer—her storytelling has completely won me over.

Okay so I’m apologizing now because I should’ve finished this book sooner because it was SO FRIGGIN GOOD! but alas, library books came first. Womp womp.
Anyways, half blood was such a good start to the covenant series. It says it’s YA but for some reason I feel like I didn’t read like your typical YA. It kept my attention and boy did it move quick. You’ve got our main character Alex, a sassy half blood who basically has her life turned on her head as she’s shipped off to train as a sentential. Daimons flood the earth searching out to kill half bloods. With a pinch of romance and lots of adventure, I look forward to reading the next books in the series.
