Before I begin, I would like to thank Sophie Sullivan for allowing me to read a Net Galley ARC of her upcoming book, Can’t Help Falling in Love, which will be available on September 17th, 2024.

Lexi Danby is struggling with jobs (including figuring out how to be a good waitress), finishing school, paying bills, and taking care of her mother who mourns the loss of Lexi’s father at home. During one of her shifts at a diner, she meets a handsome and charismatic stranger named Will, but after their first date, rumor spreads that they are engaged. It doesn’t help that Will is a Grand, a part of one of Seattle’s richest families that owns and works at a successful company. Lexi and Will agree to fake their engagement, but soon Will’s feelings for her are real. Can Will learn to openly defy his family’s expectations? Will Lexi decide falling in love is worth the risk of heartbreak?

This book was fantastic. You have Lexi, who is an ambitious, intelligent, stressed, wonderful young woman that cares about her loved ones. You have Will, who is charming, funny, and determined to stay true to his grandfather’s legacy. I loved the banter between Will and Lexi, not to mention the interactions between the main characters, Will’s siblings, and Maisie. I did appreciate the topics that were woven throughout the book, whether falling in love was worth the potential of loss, expanding financial profit over maintaining moral values, people’s views of themselves versus theirs of other people’s etc. None of the characters were perfect, but none of them were evil either. I loved watching the characters’ development throughout the story. Overall, if you like humor, great sibling and friend dynamics, wonderful discussions about vulnerability, healthy communication, sweet romance with a bit of spice, then I would highly recommend this book. Very cute book but the FMC pissed me off with their immaturity so I docked down from a 4 to a 3.5.

✨ARC Review✨

This was such a fun, cute, fast-paced, cozy read!

•Lexi Danby works 2 jobs to get her through her last few college classes and help support her mom. Three years ago, her dad died and the aftermath has been full of struggles. At 25, she’s a long ways off from the life she thought she’d be living. •
•Will Grand is the CFO for his family’s billion dollar company, Grand Babies. He’s content with his role in the company and parts he, his sisters, and parents play as they work alongside his grandfather. But he doesn’t love the role his mom has taken on of matchmaker. •
•When friends from her past show up at her waitressing job, Lexi fears their reaction and Will becomes the perfect distraction as her fake date. Then, a misunderstanding results in an engagement announcement. It’s all a ruse- but it makes her life seem put together and it’s gets his mom out of his love life. What’s the worst that could happen? According to Lexi, falling in love. •

I absolutely loved this book! I enjoyed that it was a little bit different from other fake engagement books that I’ve read. While their first “faking” and engagement did come out from a misunderstanding, they had developed a connection and wanted to explore that. They were real dating for themselves while fake engaged to the world and I thought it gave the story an interesting dynamic.

I immediately loved the character of Will. He was so kind, sweet, and supportive of where Lexi was at in her life. Where she focused on where she once was, struggles or bleak outlook on her job, clothes, etc., he continuously pointed out the strong parts that he saw in her. He didn’t care where she worked, what she wore, or what others would think. He was smitten and I loved every minute of it!

I really enjoyed the character development of Lexi throughout the story. She and her mom both realized things about themselves and each other that helped them to find the courage to move forward. The focus on accepting all the versions of yourself was great.

I adored the way that Lexi and Will’s lives began to come together so seamlessly. Especially when so much of Lexi’s insecurities were in their societal differences, it was great that all the little parts around them showed how perfect they were together!

I enjoyed this book but it was just missing something for me - like a spark. I can’t explain it right now. Maybe it was cause it felt “easy” like it was “fake marriage trope” but they both clearly liked each other so the relationship felt easy - so the big “break up” did not feel real.

For the most part all characters were likable (I’m looking at you Will’s dad) it was based in Seattle so nothing crazy.  The ending felt kinda rushed.

Hopefully the other books in the series have what this one is missing.
