A classic for a reason, although it takes a while for some real drama to start happening.

You can tell why this is a classic. With dynamic characters, a thrilling plot, and his turns of phrase, Oscar Wilde proves his infamous skill. While he could be a bit long-winded at times, I was intrigued by his commentary on society and human behavior and psychology, especially curious about which of the distinct perspectives of the three main characters he most agreed with. I always knew the gist of the story, but in actually reading it, I think I missed the “deal with the Devil” part. Now for something a bit lighter.

It’s a story of vanity and how the cost of beauty affects every aspect of our lives. Comparing a piece written over 130 years ago and we still suffer from narcissists tendencies to have the best skin, the right body, and how some become beasts and slavers to this endeavor of capturing youth forever. The man shows no true remorse or sorrow for his actions until he sees how grotesque he looks; he only attempted apologizing because he thought it would fix him to be beautiful yet again. This leaves me to wonder if we as humans saw the choices of our actions upon our skin and face, if we’d act any differently.
