I can't believe I hadn't read this already! Bridge to Terabithia is a wonderful novel about friendship and how it can turn "a stupid, weird little kid who drew funny pictures" into "a king." Paterson foreshadows the events to come but I was still unprepared for what hit me. A tragic story, yes, but I know I would have nevertheless treasured this book even as a kid.

There were a good many memorable quotes in this novel, but the following is my favorite, uttered by the ten-year-old protagonist:

"Sometimes like the Barbie doll you need to give people something that's for them, not just something that makes you feel good giving it."

This book has held up remarkably well. The PoV character's voice is credible and compelling (and quite funny with the benefits of hindsight to that age). Like many books of this nature, the story is relatively sparse, dominated by the single major event that everyone remembers the book for. Knowing what's coming creates a sense of tension, but makes the characters and their interactions more compelling.
