I loved this book as a child. This is my first re-read of it in decades. I had forgotten most of it except that it was about the power of imagination and to never use a rope swing to jump over a flooding creek. I definitely ideantified with Jess and wanted to be as brave as Leslie.
It still has all of that. Reading it as an adult, I was able to separate myself from my feelings and notice a lot more. Jess is coded as possibly queer. He is reading The Black Cauldron books by Lloyd Alexander. There is a lot of fatphobia. It accurately portrayed changing gender dynamics in the 1970s. For instance, when they first meet, Jess isn't sure if Leslie is a boy or a girl because of her haircut. There is sympathy for bullies
I still love this book.
