This books grabs your attention and holds it in a death grip from page 1 to end. There is no boring/filler content. We follow the main character through two cleverly interwoven story lines. The first, his present day mission to save humanity. The second, the memories slowly returning to him about events leading up to the launch of his mission. The delicate switching between the two contexts is masterfully done and allows the right parts of the past to be known at the right time in the future. The result is a story so good that I simply could not stop reading it.

The best books make you really care about the characters. I quickly started sympathizing with Ryland's situation. I felt the terror as hestarted to discover "things I won't spoil". I actually got excited when he made progress and solved problems. Not every book makes you feel, this one excels at it.

The work put into the detailed descriptions of the science, both real and fictional, is exceptional.
The story is plausibly realistic so you're not forced to suspend your beliefs... There is no mental struggle with the uncanny valley of science. The problems and solutions are creative and a joy to read about. You really start to feel like you're on this wonderful (and also terrifying) journey with Ryland. Not everything goes according plan, and the plot twists keep you guessing and add to the suspense.

One of the best books I've ever read!

Fun read!

I believe this is the best rendition of alien life having no knowledge on the specifics of that potential life form. The book itself is an excellent mix of science and story-telling, with an unexpected, but well integrated, amount of emotion.
