I had to read this for 8th grade English, and it wasn’t bad. The first few chapters are a little dull, but the climax is forgettable.
Simon’s death hit hard though 😭

I cannot believe that this book took me so fucking long to read. This has to be one of those books that is in the cultural reference sphere more than most others.
The story of this book is that there is a group of boys who find themselves on a deserted island in the Pacific Ocean. They start to form a clan and have a governing body in the form of a chief.
This quickly falls apart as the group splinters off and tries to take over.
There are little kids who live in fear of "the Beast" on the island, which is later used as the target for a particularly arrogant character to threaten to hunt, to gain clout in the group.

I love the characters in this book- Ralph, Jack, Piggy (RIP king), Simon- so many others. Each of the characters felt varied, felt like they were their own character. I loved the way in which their feelings were conveyed by their actions, rather than Golding telling us what we were to feel.
I like that save for the ending of the book, you can see why each character is acting in a certain way. While Ralph is the elected leader, he is also the leader who is more complacent to just stand around and keep a fire going to expedite the evacuation of the island.
Meanwhile, there is Jack, who is a hunter and leads a pack of hunters. Jack is arrogant, Jack is violent, but, Jack gets results. He is the one who power checks Ralph time and again. He and his hunters are the reason that any actual meat is eaten on the island.
While we are seemingly supposed to dislike or root against Jack, you can see how he is actually very heroic because he is trying to keep people alive. I loved how the prose describes the gradual savagery of the group taking over. They arrive and they are normal lads. But, as time goes they become more and more bestial to the point when they are even stopped being referred to by name.

This book is absolutely dripping with imagery and symbolism that would warrant a whole read through solely to digest all of the latent meaning.
The Lord of the Flies being evil incarnate is a huge one. I loved reading and picking up on the possible relationship from the numerous references to the number 3 and the possible biblical references. I thought that this book was absolutely stellar. I loved the moralistic discussions of who should lead and why, and what makes someone more able to lead than others.
There was so much in this book there is to praise, especially the prose which is nothing short of absolutely stunning in every way. There were passages which caught my attention and could keep me arrested for minutes at a time as I was just enjoying every word. Golding had an absolutely amazing talent for writing and I am so glad that I was finally able to read his seminal work. I think that this is the type of book that I will re-read in the future and get something completely different from it. There were even parts of this book that I probably missed that I will go through and read and enjoy and discover again.

I can see why this book is so loved and taught in school. I wish I could have read it in a classroom setting. The first half of this book dragged but the second half made up for it. Great classic! :)
