One of the most excellent books I've read in recent memory. Bregman may have singlehandedly convinced me of humanity's good nature and how we actually aren't all evil creatures. I would've appreciated more of a dissection of how colonialism could be explained by his "new realism", but most other examples used to provide answers to humanity's darker sides I think he argued against convincingly. If you want to become a little bit more of an optimist I highly suggest this book, as I think we should all be attempting to move away from the Hobbesian view of humanity.

What a stunning piece of literature. Everything carefully and thoroughly explained. Well paced and easy to consume: you’re not bombarded with statistics and information. Almost humorous at times, whether that is disbelief in what you’re reading or a little wit from the writer. Maybe a bit of both.
But above all, even on the worst days, after reading the worst news, this book has a tremendous power. To lift up, to warm hearts and to build faith - in humanity and oneself.
It covers everything to do with humanity. It turns so many theories on their heads, and uncovers the truth about others. There’s so many psychological theories and experiments I had learnt about, but hadn’t learnt the truth about, because a journalist picked out some juicy bits and ran with those instead. Bregman talks about animals and evolution, prisons, crime, education, healthcare, business, politics, war, prejudice - all pretty serious subjects right? Not in this book, never have I read about any of these subjects and felt so optimistic for the future. There are SO many good points that I could mention but I feel like you should read the book for maximum impact.
If you’re a bit bored and fancy something different to read, pick this. If you’re passionate for change and surrounded by cynics, this book is your new home. If you believe that all humans are inherently bad, open your mind a little and let us try to change it. If you’re a human with eyes that can read, or ears that can listen, find a copy of this book and you will inhale it.
(I am not a silly, naive person. I am a cautious, dubious person who likes to research everything well before sharing an opinion and I cannot wait to read this again.)
