This book had an interesting concept: it portrayed a place that one could physically access the same place either twenty years in the future or twenty years in the best just but traveling to the next valley. The main character, Odile, sees an elderly couple come to the present. She recognizes them, and realizes they are coming back to see their son while he’s still alive. The rest of the book all revolves around the result of his death and the fact that she saw the visitors from a different time.
To be honest, I couldn’t quite wrap my head around the way the time travel worked, nor could I keep all the government rules and plans straight.

Somewhere between a 3.5-4

(3.5 rounded down) ((via audiobook))

i liked this book more by the end than i thought i was going to at the 75% mark. the story is mystifying but also feels so plausible. you do have to suspend a little bit of reasoning (where do they get gasoline for their cars??) but honestly it treats the premise with enough care that you arent asked to do mental gymnastics to understand it.

the first "part" of the book was VERY good. i liked the younger MC and her plot a lot more than after the transition. the book becomes quite bleak and somehow MORE predictable after the inevitable thing you are waiting to happen happens. but, i will say, that the arc the plot goes through towards the end was fitting and told in such a way that doesnt feel like it is cheating you out of something.

its also a fun thought exercise to consider: are you a person who would want to visit west or east?? not sure my answer after reading this!!

Similar style to Never Let Me Go, and also reminded me of Sea of Tranquility. Overall really enjoyed the book and found the author deals with nostalgia and youth in quite an interesting way
