This is a very sweet young adult fantasy that gave off magical and cozy vibes. I really enjoyed reading this, as it was a light read and an engaging story. There was some high stakes in here with Clara having the possibility of losing her magic forever and having to save her father from a curse she accidentally put on him due to erratic magic that she can never seem to master. Xavier offers to have Clara as his apprentice but at a high price. Clara and Xavier haven’t see each other for years so they end up rekindling their relationship. Clara and Xavier transition from childhood friends to a romantic relationship was really sweet. I really enjoyed how the two main main characters ; Clara and Xavier grew as individuals but also together.

2.75? I wanted to like this but it felt on the younger side of YA than what I was expecting it to be based on the premise. The magic council and magic system contradicted itself constantly and there was inconsistency in how compassion and justice were payed out to two characters in a situation that really felt unfair and frustrating to read. It was played off as fine and all is forgiven but it didn’t sit well . I needed more fleshing out on characters stories . Maybe if it had been a duology It would have the time to give me more plot and development but it just wasn’t for me.the magic concept with flowers and feelings was really neat but the overall pace and execution of the book left me wanting a little more depth.

What a lovely, charming book!
I am enamored completely. I loved the writing style - so descriptive at times and lush but evocative and emotional. I loved Clara, simply loved her. I wish I had her magic and her strength.
The magic system... Clara's magic, ah. I keep using the word loved but I really did love it. The flowers, the emotional reaction with the flowering and the meanings attached to it, so simple and so expressive.
And the world described was also kind of magical, wholly cottage-core, quirky but cozy. Clara and Xavier's love was also done so well and it just gave of that warmth at the end. Gah, I love well done happy endings!
This one is for the comfort-read shelf. A debut novel! I'm sure to not miss the next book by Madam Bakewell.
