Sierra as always does a great job at writing horny angst, I think it’s the narrative framework that’s lacking here. Conceptually I think that the ritual elements are really interesting but it doesn’t feel like we’re doing them for logical reasons. It feels like the missing mom plot should play a bigger role but it doesn’t do as much as it could. With the kinda flimsy plot I wonder how this will work as a series. I’m interested to compare this series to St Gibson’s Savage Blooms which feels like it might explore similar concepts.
I also picked this up on audio and this story would really benefit from having multiple narrators but that seems to be a pivot the series took in later books.

Moderate: Rape, Sexual assault
Sierra Simone has done it again. Completely captivated me from start to finish.

“But I’m so susceptible to this kind of touch; I bloom like a rose when I’m handled like a weed”
#1: A Lesson in Thorns ★★★★★
This is the most kinky, queer, sex-driven book you have read or ever will read. It is horny (Poe), angsty (Auden & Saint), and atmospheric (Thornchapel itself); the plot is compelling and Pagan-ritual inspired (think orgy in the woods to awaken an ancient magical force). I literally could not stop reading.
