“Love survives all things, time, marriages, deaths. It is more what makes us immortal than even the children we leave in our wake to our graves.”

Well. That was quite a ride.

This series has officially wrecked me for nearly everything else and I can feel the beginnings of a book hangover as I write this review.

After all, money could come and go, so could health and wellness, and destiny was a fickle master, for sure. But to be loved by the one you loved? It was the optimism in the midst of crisis, it was the food when you were starving, it was the air when you could not breathe, and the light that led you from the darkness.

Devil’s Cut is the final book in the Bourbon Kings trilogy and is the culmination of one of the juiciest, steamiest, most deliciously plotted series I have read in a long time. Honestly, this series is like crack, and as with the previous two novels, I couldn’t put this down once I started. It’s so eloquently written, bitingly witty, and damn entertaining.

You for sure need to read the previous two books in the series before picking this one up, they continue one right after the other and have an overarching plot line. That being said, there is a lot to digest with this novel, and this series in general. By that I mean there are literally 20 characters, a slew of family dynamics that span generations, different homes and universities and offices and a million other locations that are pertinent to the story. There’s just a lot going on and the fact that this book flops between scenes and POVs and everything can be very confusing to some, but I actually love books that are written this way; you just need to be following from the beginning.

There’s literally so much character development in this novel that you can tell it’s the third and final of a series, everyone has a change of heart or makes decisions they wouldn’t have made in the beginning. Which is good, because there was a lot – like, a lot a lot – happening in this one, specifically deeper topics like child abuse, sexual assault, attempted suicide, and miscarriage, so trigger warning here, friends. Despite these deeper topics, the book seems to find some grounding in humor and dry wit, something I think is not only necessary but also lends a layer of realistic narratives to the novel because the author does these scenes so well.

This series is also what I like to call a mix of genres. It portrays as a romance, but is also a murder mystery, a family drama, and can even be a thriller in some cases. I think that’s one of the reasons I love this book so much, it’s not just one simple plot line, but is instead like the NYC subway system running through a trilogy of novels that all ends at this central point.

It’s a really compelling series and I’m going to miss the world and the characters so much, I’m really sad it was over because I felt like this could continue on easily for at least another two or three more books, but all good things must come to an end. I also heard this was going to be made into a TV series, which I believe would be excellent, but I have yet to hear or see anything concrete about it. I loved this series, like absolutely loved it, and I’ve come to love J.R. Ward as well. If you like contemporary fiction with these more darker and dramatic elements, these books are for you. Don’t wait four years to pick them up like I did!

This was a pretty good ending to the series. I couldn't put it down. As with the last book, there should have been more focus on characters other than Lane and Lizzie. There wasn't nearly enough Edward and Sutton - they were the 2 most interesting characters in my opinion.

4 “Bourbon, Kentucky, Lies and Love” stars

Wow! Just wow! If this is how the Warden does finales…I’m on fucking board ya’ll!

Ok so Devils Cut takes place right after Angel’s Share (The second installment in the trilogy) so I can’t say much on the plot because it’s all just a continuous spoiler at this point.

I’ll start off by saying that this is the first time The Warden has given us a finale…her other series are still going on so that’s was a new thing for her and it didn’t disappoint.

A lot of people are hesitant in picking this up, because it’s so unlike her other series and also because they’re just used to JR ruling and rocking the PNR world.

But honestly, this series just cannot be missed. Period. FULL STOP.

I enjoyed this immensely! The first chapter was gripping and engrossing. JR’s magnificent atmosphere building made an appearance in this book, as usual; so all three books are of the same quality in writing. This book is very much..a last book it just feels like you’re at the end of puzzle and you think you already know everything you need to know and then BAM another reveal BAM BAM BAMMM. This book was nonstop REVEALS so many secrets that were being kept throughout the first 2 books reached their peak in this book. There was no lapse and no warning its just reveal, secret reveal, her reveal, his reveal….oh you thought this ….SYKE ..oh you thought you knew he was..oh SKYEEEEEEE oh you think I’ve surprised you well guess again. That’s is was I think JR’s inner monologue was like while writing lol.

This book focuses a lot on the whole Samuel T stuff (I’m being vague because or spoilers) and I’m very happy how everything turned out but I do feel like this was such a big part of this book that other couples’ HEA had to be compromised. For example, Edward and Sutton, out of all the couples in this series, this one is near and dear to my heart. Compared to the destruction and dysfunctional angst of Gin and Samuel T and the Romeo and Juliet romance of Liz and Lane; Edward and Sutton transcend all of them. They were the only couple who was never a couple and the tension is amazing, coupled with Edwards current state..oh my. Every Edward and Sutton POV in all three books I was at the edge of my seat and with this book I couldn’t wait to see the progression to their HEA..but all we got was 1 fucking meeting between them and then the next was the HEA>..wtf excuse me…QUE that was so disappointing! I wanted so much more. Don’t get me wrong I’m over the moon that they’re finally together and happy but damn we got so much of liz and lane and even wayyy more of Max and Tanesha ( Max who just showed up in the end of the last book!!!) and just that little bit of the best couple..hands down..I was aggravated to say the least. I was going to 3 stars until the book made me cry.

JR really threw some curve balls with this book, you can so tell that everything was nicely planned before she even wrote the first book.
Yea, I cried twice. Each time at the Samuel T story line; it was very personal to me and it was all just amazing. Its sad that I won’t ever get to read about the Bradfords, there is defiantly potential for a spin off or novellas with so many couples but this conclusion was top notch so good. If you’ve been waiting for the series to be complete before starting…you have no excuse now..Go and DEVOUR.

Devil's Cut by J.R. Ward is the third and final book in the Bourbon Kings trilogy. I'm a huge fan of J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood, so therefore HAD to read this trilogy as well. I am SO glad I did!

We take off right from the ending of Angel's Share. True to Ward's BDB world, we have more than one storyline going on throughout the book. Sometimes that makes it hard to read a book, but it was really necessary in Devil's Cut. We follow Lane, Edward, Max and Gin through the aftermath of William Baldwine's death. The mystery of who truly killed William is still in question. Edward admits to it, but we all know he didn't do it and is taking the blame for somebody else. Who though?!

The family's life has been turned upside down and each of the children are trying to rebuild their lives without all the riches they once had. In fact, they are trying to keep themselves from basically living on the streets. Lane, who is trying so hard to keep things together, seems to be constantly running on adrenaline. He's the only one left that is not in the middle of a major crises.

At the end of Angel's Share, we see Gin getting things together for Amelia. She just knows that Richard is going to kill her. Gin continues to grow as a person and a mother throughout Devil's Cut. She makes pretty big reveals despite what those revelations will do to her and her life.

I think I could go on and on with this book. Possibly the whole trilogy. I was drawn into this story and felt every bit a part of the drama that was unfolding. I laughed and yes, I cried. This was one of those reads where you just want the story to go on forever, even though we've had the HEA. This is definitely a recommended read!
