Still really funny. I wonder where this is going to go.... There's so many options! I love that she's a foodie! It makes it so much funnier!!

The plot thickens! Now Yui is also trapped in the mysterious book, and Miaka is trying to find her as well as the seven constellations.

We've gotten to know all of the established characters more as well, especially a secret regarding Nuriko. As far as love interests go, I personally am swaying more in the direction of Hotohori. I'm a sucker for emperors and princes. However, Tamahome has a lot of potential to become my favorite, it all depends on what we learn about him and his true feelings.

Can't wait to see what happens in volume 3!

Y'all can miss me with the jokes at Nuriko's expense. Like, wow so gross. That's why I bumped it down from a 3 star to a 2 star rating. I know this is one of Watase's earliest works, but that doesn't excuse anything on her behalf.

Rating: 3.5/5

The second volume of “Fushigi Yugi: The Mysterious Play”, entitled “Oracle”, was a mixed bag. On one hand the drama, humor, and stakes were really solid. The time difference is a wonderful ticking clock and I loved both the mirror subplot and the idea that Miaka must travel between worlds if she is to stay safe and healthy. However ultimately a lot of these stakes get undercut by how easily they get solved and dismissed. It’s earned me continuing the series, but some glaring problems keep it from a 4/5.

The art is really nice and that’s about all the nice things I can say for this volume. It really shows its age; all the crazy tropes right down gender reveals are in here. It’s not GOOD, not even as a guilty pleasure, and yet I’m still compelled to read more. Possibly the best thing it has going for it is the main character knows who she’s in love with, but that also makes the current love triangle feel forces and manufactured

Now things are getting interesting. I still remember the majority of what happened because of the anime.

The gang (Miaka, Tamahome, Hotohori, and Nuriko) embark on a journey to Tai Yi-Jun's (I know her as Taiitsukun from the anime) so Miaka can go back to her world and get proper medical attention. Shenanigans ensue!

I know it's been years and I've watched the anime countless times, but each time, the unresolved sexual tension between Miaka and Tamahome get to me. I feel like a teenager as I go through these pages. It's the best feeling in the world.

I love how engaging this series is. The author built a strong universe with an engaging storyline and great characters. The second volume keeps building on the world built in the first and adds new details and new levels of complexity to the story. Even though I’ve watched the anime and know how it turns out, I can’t wait to finish the rest of the series.
