Just very meh. I liked the exploration of Ruby's communication and how much of her perspective we got. But outside of that the story was just far too intangible for me to engage with. Just really quite silly I'm afraid.

This book was advertised as a thriller, but that's disingenuous and has lead to disappointed readers (looking at the Storygraph reviews). It's much more about the emotional journey of the mother and daughter and the strengthening of their relationship through extreme hardship. It's about trust and loving people for who they are, not who you want them to be. It's about a dark night of the soul externalised as an Alaskan hurricane.

this felt like the Cold equivalent to jane harper’s ‘the dry.’ immersive descriptions and a good pace when jumping between times and perspectives. i thought the villain explained themself too much at the end, but it was believable and drew the themes together very neatly. ruby is my favourite character:)

Probably the worst book I've read this year.
The plot is absolutely unbelievable, all characters but Ruby are absolutely unbearable and the writing is terrible.
Ruby has her moments but the way she expresses herself is very poorly written.
Yasmin is a stereotypical bully. I think it might be written 10 times throughout the novel that she is beautiful. Wow.
Matt is an idiot.
The bad guys are absolutely stereotypical as well.
It's hard to decide what I hated most about it. It's bad from beginning to end.

This was spectacular, far better than I expected. It is both a character study and a thriller, and excels as both. Who knew that was even possible. The story is told from two points of view, that of a mother and her 10-year-old daughter. The voices are very distinct and both characters engaging. The two of them fly from Britain to Alaska to track down the husband/father. When they arrive in the deep of winter, they are met with the news that everyone in the remote village where he was have been killed in a terrible fire. She refuses to believe it and sets out with her daughter into the brutal Alaskan winter to find him. This barely scratches the surface of the story or the characters. Very intense. Outstanding.

I enjoyed the development of this story and the characters. It was an interesting read but the overall story seemed a little absurd the whole time I was reading it. I did enjoy how the author wrapped everything together. I also loved the depth and diversity that was added by making the little girl deaf. There are not enough deaf characters in current literature and that was a breathe of fresh air.
