Liked the story. Hated one of the narrators for the audiobook.

"They need you desperately. In some ways, you are the most important of the seven – like the control disk in the dragon's brain. Without you, the power of the others means nothing. They will never reach me, never stop me. And I will fully wake."

I'll be honest, I didn't like this book as much as the other Riordan books I've read. Don't get me wrong, I loved it, but some parts of the book just felt so dragged out, hence the kinda low rating. I did very much enjoy the first 200-ish pages or so, and the ending. It's just the middle part that I had some problems with. It's not that nothing happened - because a lot did happen - but I just felt like everything that happened was kind of repetitive, I guess. I felt like some of their encounters on their quest were kind of unnecessary, and it bored me tbh.

Negative thoughts aside, I absolutely adored the new characters, especially Leo - who has become one of my favorite book characters ever! I'm very excited to learn more about the Roman camp and meet more of the Roman demigods.

All right, let’s get this out first: this book was mostly unfiltered garbage. I want to cry.

After reading Percy Jackson and the Olympians and hearing about the existence of The Heroes of Olympus, I thought that HoO would be just as good. It’s got the same author and the same characters, I would love it, right? Right?

WRONG!

Why did I dislike it? Have a look.

Plot

The plot was good, but not page-turning. It became repetitive, actually. The various character subplots were mostly hastily dropped and unconcluded. Still, it was interesting enough to keep me reading. +1 star.

Characters

Great characters like Percy Jackson and Luke Castellan?

Jason Grace: To call Jason characterless would be an insult to the word. He has literally NO personality traits — and I mean literally NONE! Thalia is the better Grace, and she was a major character for only The Titan’s Curse.

Leo Valdez: Leo was the only great character. He had a fleshed-out personality and no love interest, which freed him from getting strangled by the red string. He deserves +1 star.

Piper McLean: Piper was the shittiest character in the book and no-one can change my mind. She had the cliché “I’m too beautiful, what a pain!” arc, which just makes her look like an ungrateful bastard. And her entire character arc revolves around Jason, which took away any chance or her having a fleshed-out life.

Minor Characters: Okay, what pissed me off about the minor characters was Annabeth Chase. Since The Battle of the Labyrinth, she was just obsessed with Percy. She appears briefly, but still she’s like, “PERCY, PERCY, PERCY.” How great!

Romance

Jason Grace/Piper McLean (Jasper): Garbage. Jason and Piper have no chemistry; they’re just put together forcefully. I have no clue why they like each other. Not to mention that it eats up Piper’s character arc and doesn’t let her grow at all.

Leo Valdez and just anybody: I feel bad for the guy, honestly. He gets rejected by Khione and practically any girl he meets. A better idea would've been pairing up him with Piper.

A new Camp Half Blood novel that has new characters, but carries on in the world of Percy Jackson. It really carries on the story. If you liked Percy Jackson you will like this.
