DNF @ 18%. Not only is the dialogue extremely icky (it reads a lot like trying to show how super cool and fun and chummy these characters all are because they work together and are fun and do cool things together and trust each other so much and so on). But also I can't respect an MC who is gonna let this asshole character (her soon to be ex) run free in this story because she hasn't been able to bring herself to break up him for months now. Alllll of her friends have been hyping her up to finally just do it and she can't for some reason? She literally said she had been short and rude with him lately and was hoping he'd just leave on his own but he hadn't. That's not the kind of MC I want to read about. Also the passively racist comment about China that another character agreed with and everything just accepted just shows me the author's inner thoughts. Lastly, I got really bored and skimmed and the smut is closed door, so that's a hard no all around.

Initial thoughts - so very little happens in this book. It was drawn out and I am just so not sure on anything to do with it at this point.

Decent zombie apocalypse, but lacking in character development.

Reads like a YA, lots of bickering with a couple of annoying characters, one fade-to-black scene. I spent most of my time reading this book waiting for things to happen. Lots and lots of gardening, prepping, canning, shooting practice, and dealing with some bad humans. Usually I don’t mind a slower apocalypse story, but I need that characterization to take lead and it didn’t here.

Knowing this book predates our current pandemic surprised me. I have been able to read pandemic books despite *motions around* all this but the similarity to things lately hit hard at first. Knowing the virus takes a different path helped me keep going.

The real weakness to this book is that it felt like it was written about young adults and for young adults and then suddenly our characters were aged up but their behaviors weren’t aged to match. You could especially see this in some relationships and also language choices. The capabilities of our main characters would make this impossible for young adults but with the age up and yet immature cast, it also just doesn’t work as is.

Amazingly good! Loved that it was a female protagonist. I teamed up a few times and laughed out loud. If I were in a z-movie apocalypse, I’d want Cassie and her family on my side!!

I enjoyed this book so much more than I expected. I’m not typically into the zombie books. But, this was more of a story about the people and their relationships. and less about the zombies.
Great narration by Julia Whelan!
