This one took me longer to get through than most books I’ve read, especially considering its short length. I think it just stems from the nature of the book - following Kazu’s ghost around as he thinks back on life, noticing things around the park then jumping to a tangent of something that happened during his life that may or may not relate. A few too many tangents for me personally and nothing that drew me in and kept me engaged.

That pretty much neatly sums up Kazu's life. Kazu feels like the unlucky reflection of the royal family and the country's big news. What is good for Japan and the emperor is a reflection of what Kazu is missing in his life as his life continues to develop despite his more and more fervent efforts to erase his own history. A fun short story- and emblematic of Japan's take on the invisibility of the homeless through the development of a modern Japan.

This is a sad book but beautifully written. Eye opening, stark and elegant. A short and worthwhile read.
