To see the world from the perspective of a homeless person is something that is not done very often. It is an important reminder of how society treats those they deem less of and how anyone can end up on the streets one day. Situations are different for everyone. As I was reading another review of this book to try and decipher the ending, the author of the review said something along the lines of maybe we ignore homeless people because it is easy for us to see ourselves in that situation one day. This book helped put that into perspective as well as give me a greater sense of empathy for homeless people. It is easy to look down on those who have less than us, but their story is not surface level.

A lyrical novel that is a bit difficult to put to words. There are no chapters and the entire narrative flows between thoughts and timelines, sometimes looping back on itself as though in remembrance. While the book is short, it's a story about a great many things. Class, homelessness, family connection, the evolution of time. And although the language seemed, at least to me, at times otherworldly (due to the ghost state and mentality of the narrator) it is still very direct in the manner it addresses the themes.

I'd recommend reading this book if you don't mind confronting some sad topics. While it looks to be a quick read, I spread it out over multiple sittings due to the nature of the content. It's not gruesome or anything like that, there's just a heaviness and weary quality to the narrative that I found easily translated itself to my mental state. Which is honestly a pretty cool feat for an author!

maybe I just didn’t get it but this was beautifully written. also that ending threw me for a loop whew

Sad on many levels but compelling and lovely to read.

This book would be great for someone, but that person isn’t me.

I think there’s a really nice story hidden in here, but overall I didn’t like it

The structure was frustratingly haphazard in a way I did not enjoy. It was incredibly random and it annoyed me. It was also very sad but in a way I found quite dull and dour.

Probably much more rewarding for those more familiar with deep Japanese culture, but I found the culturally-centered stories quite long and confusing.

Almost DNF but it’s so short I just powered through

There are some nice moments but really outweighed by nonsense

A dream-like quality to a contemplative story.

Straight up heartbreaking!
