adventurous

The series that made me fall in love with fantasy.

In the last novel a raid was launched to capture Drizzt and return him to the city of Menzzoberanzen. Drizzt was able to escape with the help of his friends, but not without a price. The noble barbarian Wulfgar fell in battle with an creature from another dimension. His friends grieve over his loss. Bruenor can barely function as king in Mithril Hall. Drizzt knows that his enemies will keep coming for him no matter what. So he decides to end it. What is plans are never become quite apparent. He decides to return to the city of his birth. Along the way he will pass many old places of memory. He will renew old friendships. He will have an encounter with his god. Most of all he will learn that he is not alone, that he must trust in his friends.

Suspenseful and moving this is a a good novel in the Drizzt saga. Here, for the first time Drizzt comes to a greater understanding about his place in the world.

I saw another reviewer write that this book had a similar plot pattern to the previous one, and this is true, but Salvatore can write one hell of a fight scene, and the third act of this novel was full of them.

I know this book is one to build tension for the story. It was great just hard to see the characters struggle with more than foes.

It has some good action at the end and drow intrigue throughout. It also has some good callbacks to old characters like the svirfneblin, Jarlaxle, Matron Baenre... her sons Dantrag and Berg were pretty unimportant, just fodder to deliver Cutter the sentient sword to Cattie-Brie. Cattie-Brie's trek through the Underdark felt repetitive in parallel with Drizzt's. This is the first story where I felt Artemis Entreri was actually interesting, more than just some evil foil to Drizzt. Parts of his story in Menzoberranzan were actually cool, but I actually didn't get who he was at first, e.g. when he kills the Matron Mother Jerlys. There was another scene where he murdered some Drow too where I didn't get that it was him at first. Artemis as a human trapped in Menzoberranzan is actually compelling story, much more so than his undying pissing contest with Drizzt; it would have been better to know that the mysterious guy was Artemis.
