What I Loved: Veronica was an interesting leading lady. There were things I didn't like about her but one of the things I LOVED about her was that she gave as well as she got. If Montgomery ignored her, she ignored him back. If he was being mean, snide, or dismissive; she would call him on his actions. I appreciate in historicals when women are written with backbone!

What I Liked: I really enjoyed the flying machine creation being Montgomery's passion. I am always interested in what things make a character tick. Since I truly felt like he was always trying to get away from something (during the course of the book) what better way to do it than to be miles above everyone else. It would truly be the best place to hide from everything.

Complaints: This book was well written but I just never connected with the story. I didn't like Montgomery much until the last 3 chapters and by then it was a little late for me to care about their love story. I thought the detail and historical elements were fantastically done and loved the information about the society in the back. I just wanted a better connection to the romance.

Why I gave it a 2.75: This is a romance novel and I wanted to want the two main characters to get together. However, at most I thought Montgomery was to stand offish and that Veronica was just stuck. The last 3 chapters I came to like them as a couple but that was a little to late.

Who I would recommend this too: Historical Romance readers. I have actually heard the other 2 books in the series are fantastic so please check them out.

Fine for a romance paperback, but characters are not super complicated nor do they grow a great deal. “Mysteries” seem rather low stakes, easy to determine the truth, and the plot overall is thin. Obstacles are easily overcome or remain unobtrusive, if obnoxious to the characters.
BUT the book doesn’t end in a surprise pregnancy, which is nice.  Romance scenes are spicy and passionate. Characters are interesting and likable. Checks many boxes for a boiler plate romance novel, without any consent issues.

This book has one of the pet peeves I should have included on the Top Ten Tuesday list: 'Too Stupid To Live'. In the beginning Veronica seems to fit into this category way too perfectly. We meet her as she's drugged and about to be raped by a group of men part of a secret society. Seriously, how does one get into this kind of situation? And then when she's turned out by her aunt and uncle, she thinks it would be a very good idea to just go around naked looking for someone to take her in.

Yes, this sounds bad. But bear with me and the story. Of course, Montgomery (horrible, horrible first name) saves her and they get married. He is damaged from his past and haunted by the ghosts of said past. He is not a very sociable person, as in he doesn't really talk. When Veronica questions him, he just turns and leaves. The only connection they have is in the marital bed. It was nice to see them grow closer outside of it as well.

Veronica after her moment of brain-loss, is actually a nice, sensible person. She also has the gift of sensing what others are feeling and while for me it wasn't necessary for the storyline, it was interesting.

I'm not really sure why Veronica's family was so nasty to her and it irks me that this wasn't explained. Her cousin was jealous, ok, I can get that. But her aunt and uncle weren't exactly warm and fuzzy either.

There was some wonderful tension and this was an enjoyable read, so I did like it in the end.
