This reminded me a lot of The Way we live now by Meg Rossoff which is a shame as Rule Britannia was written a lot earlier. I’m always a sucker for alternative histories and this one is all too plausible

Very much enjoyed this. Classic Du Maurier characters but feel and plot was unique. Very poignant, given all the issues and potential troubles with the EU atm.

I’m saddened that this book was so difficult to go through. I literally had to force myself to continue reading it, and I only did because I wanted to see what the consequences of Brexit could be according to du Maurier. Such a recent topic that was thought up by the writer about fifty years ago. That alone made me want to read it. I’m not even sure why I didn’t like it. The lack of suspenseful events? Unrealistic scenarios? Strange dialogues? The writer herself did not expect to receive negative critique, being seen as her worst novel as to how different it is compared to her previous books. I still plan on reading more of du Maurier throughout this year, knowing how much of an amazing writer she is.

Some of my favourite classics have been written by Daphne Du Maurier but this one didn't excite me.
Great language but the plot was a little bizarre.
