Avery is a bright 9 year old girl, but she's "difficult"; diagnosed with ADHD but showing hallmarks of ODD or perhaps just incredibly lax parenting, she's able to argue or "manipulate" what she wants out of her parents. It causes a rift in her family, and it makes her an incredibly unlikable victim when she disappears one day, seemingly snatched on her way home from school. Her father knows the truth though - that she came home on her own (against the rules, she's supposed to walk with her older brother), that they got in an argument, that he struck her, that he left her alone at the house. Now her father is trapped in his silence, and Avery is gone. Where is she? What has happened to Avery?

Constantly pivoting back and forth between all the potential players. This book made me feel some seriously potentially concerning dislike for a 9 year old child. It was pretty good overall; some argued that
Avery was too smart/manipulative for a 9 year old. She's noted as gifted, so I don't think it's too much of a reach for her to be "academically" a couple of years ahead, especially since she has that age-appropriate lack of foresight/belief that she's smarter than the people around her
. The ending is abrupt and it desperately made me want more.

Meh, this kept the pages turning but for no real reward. It was fast and it was fine. Nothing to write home about.
