I’ve loved all of her books and this was no exception. Love a tragic YA about life and love and learning to enjoy the moment.
There were parts of this book I enjoyed, but overall, it felt like there was too much packed into the story. There was the magical realism element--which I thought was a fun and interesting concept--but that often took a backseat to many other storylines: Evie and X's romance, the dance competition, Evie's struggle to accept her dad's infidelity, the drama/romance between her two best friends. There was so much going on, and when one part of the story was the focus, the others took a backseat. It felt like I was reading 2 or 3 different books. The ending is interesting but also felt a little unsatisfying as a reader.
Well, dammit, when I started reading this, I smugly anticipated giving this a 3 (predictable romance, I could see all the tired tropes and predictable plot points), and then the ending turned sweet and made me cry. And a book is always a 4 if you immediately want someone else to read it. I’m not much of a romance fan but Instructions for Dancing is a keeper.
This book was my 2nd one that I've read by Nicola Yoon, and also my 2nd chance for the author because the 1st book was a total disappointment (for me).
But this one, oh my... unique and interesting premise and I loved it

Omg this was so cute and sweet with a touch of sadness. Loved it and finished it in 4 hours. Thanks for the recommendation Katelyn!
Interesting but could've been more.
I absolutely loved that the book is so fast-paced, easy-to-read but also philosophical and emotional. I loved how the style of writing changes up every few pages. Makes it even more fun to read. The majority of the book was so lovely but I felt like some important component was missing (hence 4 and not 5 stars) I kept wanting more. A lot of things just happen and there's a lot of tell instead of show in the book.
But overall it was great, the message was heartbreaking but sweet and lovely!
WARNING : You will cry!!

Okay just finished drying my tears uhm... let's dig in!
I loved the fast pace of the book it gives it the lighthearted romance book feel and you really zoom through it without noticing that you started caring for the characters. I kept imagining this book going in a million directions and was still surprised in the end. It hit me harder than I expected and I found the message of the book to be very sweet.
Some critiques I have is that maybe the characters should've been aged up a bit, there is very little reason for a book to have so many ~tragic things~ happening to teenagers. But sure I guess it is the way the world works. The other thing I have to say TO HELL with the dad. All my homies HATE the dad.
Anyway, it was for a second there going to be a 5 because I was all wrapped up in my emotions but then I remembered that I had teensy weeny complaints and notched it down to 4. I REALLY wanted this book to be a romance but I'm glad with the way it turned out regardless and that's it, peace.

I loved all of Nicola's other books, but it took me until 40% to properly get into this one and I couldn't really tell you why.
I understood Evie's anger, outrage and disillusionment, I even understood her not wanting to talk about it, but I couldn't get over her stubborn attitude towards her family (who are entitled to feel the way they do) and her friends who support her through everything she is going through, or do why it takes her so long to understand and appreciate she is their support, too.
There were some instances where the author throws in a comment referencing racism or homophobia, but they were more of a nod to the current social climate rather than a valid character or plot point, which was just distracting.
I loved the paranormal element, the dancing, the slow romantic build, the musical references and our heroes' contradictory life paths. The supporting characters were brilliant, too.
I understand other critics' comments about the lack of a definitive ending, but I rather like the vagueness. That's life, after all - there are no guarantees, and we all live in hope; isn't that the whole point of the story?
Enjoy the journey.

“Love is the question and the answer and the reason to ask in the first place. It’s everything. All of it.” yes yes yes to this book i loved it. So heartbreaking but do good
