Up until the 85% mark this book was going fine but I wondered what all the fuss was about, it seemed like a pretty average, slightly magically-realistic story. But then the last 15% came and I spent them sobbing my eyes out with my heart shattered
I definitely liked this a lot more than I thought I would.
The book is definitely full of romance cliches, but it's very self-aware, and that makes it all the more endearing and funny. And while I didn't really enjoy the explanation for how the "magic" was implemented in the story, I did enjoy what it allowed the characters to do and realize.
Not bad, Yoon. Not bad at all.

Cute little young adults book on love. It would be great for a younger reader, but for the adult I am it was a bit too fairy tale-esque without the princess.
This is a captivating YA read. It’s mostly a YA romance but with a unique premise, that Evie can see the entire past and future of the relationship of any couple she sees kissing. She doesn’t tell anyone about this, which leads to some inevitable weirdness.
So this part takes some suspension of disbelief, but once you do that, it’s a great story. It’s also based on a ballroom
Dancing competition, which wasn’t my favorite, but maybe appealing to some. Sweet and a little bit sad .

Simple, and the more enjoyable for it. It's a story about enjoying the middle of things instead of focusing on the beginnings or endings
Just finished reading this book during the overnight shift at work and I am in tears. I LOVE her writing and I love that she makes me feel all the feels.
"The problem with broken hearts isn't that they kill you. It's that they don't."
Thank you to Penguin Random House, Turning Pages NZ and Netgalley for allowing to the opportunity to read this as an ARC.
Evie has all but given up on love. After her dad left her mum for another woman, she turned into a cynic, believing there is no such thing as a happily ever after, and that real love doesn't exist. Everything starts to change one afternoon, when she notices a couple kiss, and the timeline of their relationship is revealed to her - beginning, middle, and end - only proving to Evie that all relationships inevitably end.
On a mission to find answers, she goes to the only place she hopes will help, a dance studio. She learns to dance with a boy, X. She's forced to rethink her ideas on relationships and love, as X and Evie grow closer to each other.
This book captures something beautiful - from the heartbreak of your family splitting up, to the world around you changing too quickly for you to keep up, and the vulnerability of falling in love. Evie's journey of self discovery is so relatable, and I found myself really appreciating some of these lesson that Evie had to learn. The character felt very real, and well fleshed out, and I loved the dynamic that Evie had with her friends.
This book had such an important message of appreciating the love you have, no matter how long (or short) you will have it, because "just because a thing ends, doesn't make the thing any less real."
The ending really broke my heart. I had tears when I finished it, because it was just such a bittersweet and beautifully written ending. Prepare for some emotional turmoil while finishing this!
Nicola Yoon, you have made a wonderful first impression, and I cannot wait to see what else you have written!
"Beginning are nice, but the best part is right now, in the wide-open middle. I made fun of you, but you were right this whole time. I should live in the moment and all that other stuff."

Evie, Instructions for Dancing
Damn the ending was a surprise. I was thinking of giving it 3 stars because it took me quite a long time to read and overall I wasn’t THAT interested in the relationship between the main characters but the way the ending wraps it all up made me round it up to 4.
By far the most interesting part of the book was the way Evie thinks about love and how that changes throughout the book, but the rest of the book, for me, lacked something. It’s a pretty short book and I think it maybe would have benefited it being a bit longer but still at the end it was enjoyable.

I'm so glad that I was warned that this was not a HEA. Even though I knew I still cried so hard.
Ugh but it was so worth it. This book is heartbreakingly beautiful. If all of Nicola's books are like this I'll need to pace myself because I cannot be this distraught back to back, but I loved the world she created and I can't wait to read more of her work. I was feeling really cynical before I read this book. My usual fluffy happy books weren't working so I thought, why not read something that will just break my heart open. It did :'(.
Proceed with caution. The chemistry and banter are soooo good but yeah this story will break your heart but I guess all love stories do eventually.
