The Secret World of Maggie Grey has been sitting on my TBR forever, and I finally got around to it! I’m so glad I did!
Let’s get the one thing out of the way: yes, it could use a good edit. There were some errors that made me pause, but honestly? They didn’t take away from the story. I was still locked in.
Now, while I liked Maggie, the girl gang she surrounded herself with stole the show for most of the book. Souxie? Complicated and full of secrets. Girl, I can already see some truly awful decisions on your horizon.
Asha? Whew. I know you’ve been through it, but let that wall down a little! Solomon better not play with her feelings… he seems like he has good intentions but I don’t trust it!
And Quan? Stay a cat forever, because the comedy you bring is top-tier. I cackled more than once at your unnecessary attitude.

As for Namir and Maggie? Yeah. I need more. Immediately. Please. Granger don’t make me beg 😩😩😩
Overall, I really enjoyed this one! Granger built such a fun and cool world that pulled me in and had me clicking straight into book two the second I finished. Highly recommend if you love a black story, a bit of magic, and a little romance sprinkled in too.

I just couldn’t get into it and I wasn’t a fan of how some of the men spoke about or to women in the book.

Come here for a fun time. We have magical creatures at an underground HBCU. Characters who do not act their age. A plot that is not found until the end. But ironically it’s nostalgic. Like 90s made for TV movies that you can’t stop watching. I was annoyed with the smoking and loc obsession. I wanted a little more about their actually schooling and personal history because this found family/friendship is unique to say the least. This book has a lot of typos and structuring mishaps but somehow its perfectly imperfect. I am a fan.

The Way I Loved This Book!
This is what the classic School Daze would be if it was a school for magical beings! This work was so well written, so real, so culturally relevant and so downright fascinating and entertaining, I couldn’t put it down. Every character felt tangible and memorable. I loved the multiple POVs and the details describing each of the schools at Drew Collins
While I connected with each of the characters, Quan and Asha were my favorites. I was captivated by their backstories and entertained by their quick wit and banter with other main characters.
To me, this is an excellent example of how Fantasy should be written; with relatable culture references, bold and striking mythical beings and (for a series) a cliffhanger that leaves us sitting on the edge of our seats,
Oh! And the audiobook was absolutely stellar! I listened while I followed along in the ebook, for the perfect reading experience. This author is new to me and I’m definitely going back to read all of their backlist.
