Pretty good but doesn't quite deliver after the build up.
This book took me completely by surprise. I was hooked from beginning to end and it's been ages since I've read anything so gripping.
Sure, the writing wasn't the best and the verb "to say" was a little overused, but who expects lyrical writing from a thriller?
So many plot twists, so many cliffhangers at the very end of a chapter, I'm simply in love with this book.
As someone who didn't read the rest of the series and picked this one up on a whim, I still understood everything and boy, did I enjoy myself while reading.
You know a book is great when you want to read on because it's so good and you want to know what happens next, but also you don't want to read on because then it'll be over too soon and that is exactly what this book was for me.
Highly recommend picking this one up!

Not my favorite Reacher. Took me a week and a half to read it. That's not a good sign.
Quite an enjoyable continuation of the saga, lots of twists and turns. I also enjoy the 1st person renditions when we really get to dig deep into Reachers mindset. Definitely more of a psychological one but still incredibly grippy

This was my first Jack Reacher novel to read. I definitely enjoyed it. There is a good steady stream of action and suspense that made this book hard for me to put down. Based on that, it should have been a 5 star book, but I just couldn't bring myself to give it five stars. The writing style and the tone of Jack Reacher's nonchalant tough guy first person narration is just a little too stylized, even cliche. I actually enjoyed that style a lot, but it still kind of cheapens the experience. This story is an excellent piece of light entertainment, but it is not a truly brilliant book.
Now this is a conundrum. I wouldn't usually read 2 Reacher books back to back but I've heard so many terrible things about this book that I figured I should get it over with now. Otherwise when I'm down to the last few, I'll be disappointed. It was right there at the library so I thought why not.
And, I don't get the hatred. I mean, it's far from his best efforts, but then the Reacher books are a known mixed bag, ranging from excellent to crap. This certainly isn't at the bottom in my opinion, more in the mediocre/ok range.
There's a lot of complaint about this being 'wordy' which cracks me up. I aspire to avoid book snobbishness but this really isn't wordy. The first person approach (which I've quite liked in the past for Reacher) lends itself to more detailed narrative for obvious reasons, but the dialogue and even the descriptive aspects are reduced to short, sharp sentences, extremely in many instances and often distracting, while every now and then, Child throws in a messy sentence I found myself stumbling through. Graceful it is not.
Still, the action is sound and I appreciate the London setting. Sure it's different to the usual but it felt real and conjured up memories of London in some detail. The 'baddies' are caricatures and the man mountain just brings to mind [b:Persuader|455941|Persuader (Jack Reacher, #7)|Lee Child|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1174926770s/455941.jpg|224290], especially with all the Dominique Kohl references. Repeatedly calling to mind one of your best books is a ballsy/stupid move. The ending is mediocre at best.
So not terrible (think [b:Echo Burning|455930|Echo Burning (Jack Reacher, #5)|Lee Child|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1388386347s/455930.jpg|22852] or [b:Tripwire|220970|Tripwire (Jack Reacher, #3)|Lee Child|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1388251144s/220970.jpg|1383273]), just a bog standard mediocre Reacher novel. I LOVE Jack Reacher's novels and I really wanted to love number 19. But I was a bit disappointed. The beginning was great, the ending was good. The whole in-between was super long and somewhat boring. I skimmed. A lot. I usually enjoy Lee Child's detailed descriptions of all the action but this time, it was long.... Very long. Liked the plot. Still like Reacher. But a bit tedious in places.
