The intrigue wasn’t quite intriguing enough, and there wasn’t really a heart. Also—Zoloft doesn’t work like that. It is an SSRI and you can’t just take one to like, calm down? That’s. This isn’t. That’s not how any of this works!

I like how the author took Jack Raacher out of the US and put him in Europe. The story was quite well developed. I guess my only disappointment was how it ended. I thought it would be some major conspiracy but instead it was just a General trying to get himself some more attention. overall, a good read.

Jack Reacher punches evil to death again. In the first person this time. Which actually changes nothing except the pronoun. Well, it might have spoilt it a bit because he already talks a lot so having him narrate was a bit much. Plus it's difficult to imagine him sitting down to type it. It should have been "as told to Lee Child". That said there's some fun to be had. Especially with the meticulous pedantry which is blind to the massive plot crater at the center of the tale.

It's unusual that I would give a Lee Child book only 3 stars, but I can honestly say that I didn't really get into this one as much as most of the others (the exception being One Shot, which was rubbish). So for this reason I can assume that this novel is also going to be made into a terrible movie and may even have been written that way. I don't really know what about this book that didn't make it sparkle, maybe Reacher is getting old meaning he can't have acceptable romantic liasons with 20 something CIA agents. Maybe he is getting a big jaded and knowing everything about everything is just not novel any more. Or maybe I've had my head buried in too much fantasy recently and so wasn't in the right groove for this book. Either way, it wasn't as good as some of the others.

Didn't mean to read this but it was in a list of top 10 thrillers in the Times newspaper. Set mainly in the UK and France, Reacher is investigating an apparent assassination attempt on the French president ( hmm...Day of the Jackal, anyone :) ) There are plot twists and lots of the usual tips and tricks from Reacher, and the plot thickens well. You always know what you'll get with Lee Child, but for me there is never too much similarity to make me lose interest - OK Reacher usually wins, we know that, and are cheering for him. It's goodies vs baddies - but I really liked the twist at the end of this one. I also appreciated the symmetry, as Reacher first gets involved after reading an Army newspaper - and at the end of the story, the final outcome is revealed.

Not a whole lot different from most of the other Reacher novels other than the setting (Paris and London instead of rural America). There's a highly trained sniper on the loose, who may be targeting the G8 summit, or he may be after Reacher for payback, or maybe both. The CIA talk Reacher into defusing the situation, even though he's really bait. Typically, the book is a pot boiler, as we follow Reacher and his incredible powers of deduction and superhero invincibility, leading to a climax and conclusion in the final pages.

Really, I probably don't need to read any more of these, but I can't help myself. They are fun, quick reads, despite the cookie cutter plot and characters that Lee Child has perfected. They are occasionally humorous, and Child always includes a level of technical detail that holds my interest.

I read Jack Reacher books for the fast unpredictable adventure and an outcome that is difficult to guess. This volume continues the theme and style, but more and more I find there are significant interludes with lots of background information which to my mind do not add much to the plot. I then am tempted to skim read until something starts to happen again. Very enjoyable if a little frustrating!

Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.

This was a fairly typical Jack Reacher espionage thriller. I enjoy reading Lee Child's work and this is no exception. I did not figure out all the twists and turns til the end. The character of Reacher is well developed, but I do wish the female characters were developed more deeply.

Another quick, good read for Reacher fans.
