The audio book is read by the author, which makes the reading feel authentic, especially as she speaks the names in French.

The book is a memoir of life on the street, specifically her experience living there for several years. She's an inquisitive reporter who spends time getting to know the people and the place. It's a mix of history, wit, and personal narrative that blend well together.
slow-paced

this book had lots of unmet potential. Whilst much of what was written the style of writing means i will remember little of it tomorrow. The author writes in the dreariest of fashions and fails to evoke fully the sights and sounds of the street. The most interesting stories were the one about writing to the Pope and the one about the "flying" church. Most of the stories seemed only to emphasise what a "marvellous" person she was almost as if she was totally responsible for the streets atmosphere . In addition my e book was absolutely awful, the ends of chapters were cut off (maybe only a couple of words) or perhaps the first words of next chapters were run into the end of another and then cut into by the photos. Place names were cut into 2 words on several occasions

Nothing charming or gripping about this book, even if it is about Paris. I kept waiting for some really charming stories to be told, but alas there weren't. Yawn.

The author clearly has a lot of passion for this street and has put together an excellent overview of its history and character. However, I didn't share her passion. I think this could have been a long form article instead of a book.

If I were going to Paris, I could see bringing this book along on a walk up the Rue des Martyrs.

DID NOT FINISH

I won't rate it as I only read 43 pages. As much as I wanted to love it, I was just so bored. :(

Interesting slice-of-life essays about the people and shops on the rue des Martyrs in Paris.
