This is a fun exploration of one specific street in Paris through the history, geography, and mostly the people of the street. She makes lots of connections with shopkeepers and others along the street and tells their stories and some historical stories and other bits of interest about the street. It was really lovely and interesting to hear about all these people.

Absolutely fell in love with this book!!!

Wow! I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a non-fiction book this much - I could barely put this book down. It's not a suspenseful book - it won't keep you on the edge of your seat wondering what's going to happen next - it's just a beautifully written book about a small neighborhood in Paris, its inhabitants, and a beautiful style of life that is slowly dying in cities all around the world.

I recently stayed in Montmartre and used this book before I left as a guide book for the street I was preparing to know, and once I returned as a reverie of a street to which I wanted to return.

I like Elaine Sciolino. I've read some of her other works about France and I like her ability to soften the hardest of Parisian hearts. She's curious, compassionate, and confident and her narrative of the self-possessed shop owners and mysterious neighbors gives an inviting look at daily life along a colorful street.

Loved it! Great memoir, lots of history and neighborhood lore, I love how the author makes me feel part of the fun.

Paris is my favorite city, and this book captures much of what I love about Paris and France. In a time when I am unable to travel, this book took me to the Rue des Martyrs in Paris and made me feel as though I were living there for a week.
