My favorite book in the series so far.

This was soap opera -esque and a lot too long.

This review serves as a broad overview of the entire series.

In short should you read the series? Yes, in fact you should. There are many other more expensive titles that are surely far worse uses of your time.

These books are steeped in their historical roots which many people have pointed out. What I think is important to mention is that history (and truth to certain events) merely frames up a time period steeped in lore and paranoia level superstition. While some points of the story do at times feel repetitive the saga embraces an overall theme throughout.

At their core these are mysteries with an interesting cast of characters. As the story progresses people age and in some cases perish via all sorts of interesting ailments, tortures, executions and sickness. The author does a wonderful job at utilizing the knowledge of today to craft interesting solutions that seem innocuous in their time period but provide an enjoyable solution for the present day reader.

Did I find these books to be modern masterpieces of fiction? The answer to that is ultimately no however I did enjoy reading them and plan on sticking around for the upcoming adventures.

For the low price of $25 dollars you really can’t go wrong.

This was my favorite book in the series so far. Although a few of the plot twists were pretty obvious, the mystery was interesting and I felt that the stakes were higher so I cared more what happened. Overall I really like Magdalena as a character, and I thought she gained some complexity in this book.

I really like this series. Personally, I liked this better than the first and can't wait for the next. More twists and turns in this one, kept me wanting to read more.

This is a lovely, well written story that mad me turn every page. I love how the characters develop with every story and the dynamic with this one was lovely as we learn more of the history of Jakob and the relationship of Magdalena and Simon grows.

Honestly, if it were not for the weird translation, this book would be a five-star review. It's the same complaint I've had for the previous two stories. I seriously think the German guy who wrote these would flip if he knew. I wonder if he does? Makes me wish I spoke German....

Anyway, I really want this review to be about the story, not the translation. Luckily for me the story in The Beggar King was fun enough I *almost* didn't even notice the awkward phrasing.

This time around the tables are turned, and our favorite midieval executioner finds himself on the receiving end of the unjust--and very, very painful--17th century legal system. Luckily for him, his daughter Magdalena and her man Simon are working to clear him and save him from the torture chamber. Of course, it's never quite that simple, and once again we are led on an adventure where the good guys keep nearly getting killed and the bad guys can never quite close the deal on their evil plan. It's gruesome fun!

I'm glad that I've kept going with this series - each one gets better! There were still some repetitive bits in this book - translation gap maybe? - but overall this was fun, mysterious, fascinating historical fiction. I'm looking forward to continuing on with the next book!

just as bloody brilliant as the first two
