This book was a chunker that start off in dramatic fashion and did not let up. I mostly had no idea what was going on (in a good way) and could not put together the pieces fast enough, so I was surprised by every reveal. Such a good historical mystery with creative characters and such a unique ambiance.
This was the best Hangman's Daughter book yet - super suspenseful! However there were several times where I wanted to reach through the pages and tell Magdelena to just shut up already! Lots of good twists in the story that you don't expect.

Better than book two. Again the jealousy between the love interests was distracting and could have been cut easily in half or done away with completely.

The beginning of this was very violent and brutal and it kinda put me off. But, this is medieval Bavaria so they was a lot of violence going around. It’s an accurate description of the times, but be warned the beginning hits you hard. But, it calms down after that.
Other than that I really enjoyed it. I liked the various characters, they all really stood out. The Venetian ambassador was very charming, the beggar king was the guy you didn’t want to like but did, and Simon and Magdalena were as passionate as ever.
The interesting part about this book that separates it from the others in the series is focuses more on Simon and Magdalena. It’s up to them to solve the mystery instead of the hangman. For once it’s him that needs the saving and I really liked the new dynamic.
Once again great mystery! I had a really hard time telling who it was. The plot was genius the whole plan was really thought out.
The only complaint I have is that it did seem to get slow at parts. Other than that I highly recommend this book and I can’t wait to read the next one, The Poisoned Pilgrim.

Like the earlier books in this series, 'The Beggar King' was an enjoyable read. Always interesting, sometimes a bit 'out there,' and with the occasional unexpected plot twists to keep the reader hooked. Not as good as the first, this was still a good enough read that I found it hard to put down once I'd started reading. That said, when life gets in the way, I didn't find this one calling me back to it the way the first one did. And while I will likely read the next in the series, I'll move onto something else first.
Still like this series, I'm just kind of done with it. It did have a really nice ending. And it makes me miss Germany.
The book drags in parts but was another solid effort by Potzsch. Jacob Kuisl still comes alive on the pages under the author's attentive hand and for the most part, the book reads quickly. Enough excitement and mystery keeps you turning the pages.
