I quite liked Bathsheba’s character after all, contrary to Tess of the D’Ubervilles where I hated all the characters although still enjoyed the book very much.
Gabriel was my favourite and it’s quite easy to understand why since among the various suitors was the only sane one.
Hardy is definitely one of the best portrayer of characters and personalities that I have ever had the pleasure to read.
He has this way of talking about a character, even a secondary one, that makes them so real and vivid and nuanced.

This was a roller coaster ride between interesting and dull. The author was very wordy though the plot kept me reading. It reminded me of a lengthy Jane Austen. I spent a good deal of time annoyed with Bathsheba -- at least the ending was good.

Not my cup of tea. Too many chauvinist “observations” about how women think. So many details could have been tweaked snd resulted in a more enjoyable book. As it stands, I’m not in a rush to read more Hardy.

Devo ricordarmi che Hardy non può più pubblicare nulla. Ditemi che c'è un suo romanzo inedito che deve ancora uscire!
Le eroine di Hardy si sa, sono poco convenzionali, delle rivoluzionarie che amano rompere gli schemi. Tuttavia, nell'Inghilterra vittoriana non c'era spazio per una forte indipendenza, associata al sapere esattamente cosa si vuole nella vita.
Bathsheba è una bellissima donna che riceve una cospicua eredità. Assieme alla fortuna arrivano anche due pretendenti più uno che l'ha sempre amata, anche quando era in povertà.
Da fare invidia alla migliore delle soap opere e non la chiamiamo soap opera soltanto perché all'epoca non c'erano radio o tv. Ovviamente il tocco alla Hardy c'è sempre. L'autore è sempre dalla parte delle sue protagoniste, anche quando non sono esattamente dei personaggi positivi come Bathsheba, ma che volete farci, lo scrittore si affeziona alle sue creature.
Bathsheba non è esattamente una vittima come Tess, o come Viviette, in tal senso c'è un upgrade significativo, ma è altrettanto vero che siamo comunque in un contesto socio economico estremamente sfavorevole per la nostra protagonista. Certo oggi non avrebbe scusanti.
