Upon my initial reading of the summary, I thought this might be a typical knitting-shop mystery/romance with the edge of an urban fantasy. Not so. No edge at all. It was your typical knitting-shop mystery/romance with the edge of a cute fuzzy kitten. A kitten which likes to cuddle in a basket full of roving (that's pre-spun fiber fluff for you non-knitters).

I can give credit that for what it is, it's decent. If you like edge-less knitting mysteries and don't mind the possibility of fairies inserting themselves into your sickly sweet plot, then this book is for you.

It does kind of use the typical "fae" plot, but not quite to its full annoyingness. Yes, there is a place that's losing its fae power, yes the narrator is only half-fae, yes if said woman doesn't fall in love and have a baby the world is in danger, and yes there is family vs. family violence, but it's cozy-fae. It's cozy-everything. It's a warm sweet kitten asleep in a basketful of roving. Blech.

Romance in the paranormal genre that was just OK, not really a good match for me.

Knitting, magic, secret communities hidden in plain sight, the beginning of a romance, intrigue, and a New England setting? Why, yes, I would like to read a book containing all those elements. Luck me, this book has them all!

I normally don't go in for romance of any kind, but this particular romance was slow-building and more realistic than expected given, you know, the magic involved. I can't wait to get into the next book in this well-paced and well-written series!

Took some time to build up. And some parts were expected while others weren't. I love the setting and woukd love to live in Sugar Maple. I fully intend to continue the series.

The best thing about this book is that the knitting is spot on. I'm a huge knitter and an even more voracious reader so I'm always on the hunt for when authors get it right. Bretton clearly is a knitter because all the little jokes and tie ins she throws in are spot on. The story is magical and I can't wait to read the second!
