Beta is not Alpha 2.0 and is another example of the breadth of genres that Jasinda can write. It is nearly impossible to review the book without spoilers. So I will say this: if you want a mind fuck romantic erotic thriller, read this! Bravo, Ms. Wilder.

This book was the 2nd installment in the Alpha Series. All I can say is wow. It was intense and heart wrenching. You have love, friendship, crazy and violence all in one. I wouldn't say it left you with a cliffhanger but it definitely left you knowing you will read the next installment to see how everything works or doesn't work out.

What I loved about this book was the story... without all the declarations of love and failure and trust on repeat... these were a pass for me and the pages that I skipped most. Otherwise the story was exciting and well written and round about hot and steamy. Just the little things that bothered me but I guess that's my preference.
Would I read it again? I guess not.
Would I recommend it? Yes if you are into hot steamy action packed romance dive into it, but be ware there are trigger warnings and there a pages were both the heroine and the hero declare love and trust and their failure...

Alpha created mixed reactions among readers because many of Jasinda Wilder fans were used to the New Adult genre. She clearly classifies the book in the Erotic Romance genre. Many of her fans were expecting a romance that was similar to her New Adult and Contemporary novels where the formats focused on emotional angst and new love. Alpha clearly focused on the sensuality and sexual side that is expected in an Erotic Romance. If you are looking for a sensually hot read that has an strong element of suspense combined with erotic romance, Beta is the book to read.
Beta picks up where Alpha left off. Roth and Kyrie have built a strong relationship based upon love, respect, and chemistry. They are traveling the world and celebrating their newfound love for one another. All seems perfect in their lives until Roth’s past comes back to haunt them in a horrific way.
Roth has disappeared, people are trying to kill Kyrie, and she is stranded in France alone. One phone call to Roth’s security specialist, Harrison, sets the wheels in motion. Kyrie and Harrison will have to infiltrate the dark underworld of one of the most powerful crime families in the world. They will have to risk their lives to save Roth’s life.
Roth’s past has come back to claim him. His past business affairs and life style delved into the other side of legal business practices. Although he walked away from that world long ago, it still has a hold on him. He will suffer beyond belief for his past transgressions. He will do it willingly to keep Kyrie alive.
As the book progresses the readers will be on the edge of their seats. They will be appalled by the violence and acts of revenge carried out. It will take monumental planning and lethal execution by Harrison and his men to save Roth and Kyrie. It will take the strength of will to survive. It will take the strength of their love to heal the horrific atrocities they survived.
The love that Roth and Kyrie share is strong and resilient. Their commitment to one another is the only way to defeat their enemies. Their passion for one another will heal their souls.
Just when the reader feels good about Roth and Kyrie finally finding the peace they need for their future, Jasinda will drop the bomb. The ending is a cliffhanger that will make the readers scream for more.

I was glad to see that the story picked back up and ran quickly. I was worried that when I started it, it wouldn't have as many twists. It was fairly quick with the action and the cast of characters were awesome. One of the really good things about this book is, it brings a cause to light that's not always talked about. When people think of the word/action "rape" it's usually where a victim is a woman. In this case, it didn't. It can take any psychopath to be that way. With Roth being an "un-likely" victim so to speak, it shows a vulnerability that may not have been. Yes, here's this strong, brave man, but he suffered at the hands of another. He had to overcome so much. Just as much as she did. I'll be honest and say some of it bothered me, and it can be a trigger for some. Each character has such a strong presence as well. I loved how it ended though. It left it open for the next one to come on through. I would read it again.

content note: rape, kidnapping, nonconsensual drug use, torture, waterboarding
This started out interesting: Valentine, Kyrie's benefactor and love, has been kidnapped while she sleeps and a hitman shows up where they have been staying. Fairly epic car chase and escape for Kyrie and Harris, but then perspective switches to Valentine.
Valentine, with his kidnapper and she is intent on having him, even when he tells her “'This is rape, you know.’ I sounded cool and calm, as if rage and horror weren't rifling through me.” (And yes, I would be equally as bothered if it was a woman being kidnapped, raped, drugged, and raped again.)
The action parts are intense, but it is really disorienting / distressing to go from somewhat questionable coercion/ consent of the first erotica to rape and torture.
Also, once again no use of condoms, even after he has been raped by another woman who has discussed her other sexual partners amongst her security forces.
Oh, and more rape. :/

(Rape and torture in a standard thriller / crime novel I can usually deal with, but in an erotica series, I’m having trouble.) Yes, there was “healing together” sex after the rapes, but just nope for me. A tiny part of me is slightly curious if they all get killed or manage to deal with the big bad, but more of me is just nope.

This is one of my favorite Jasinda Wilder books. It reminded me of the the days of Luke and Laura on GH on the run from the Cassadines. I can't wait for Omega!!!

Yes! Loved it. Honestly this book was a roller coaster in which I had to put down cause I just got so damn frustrated with but then eventually picked back up. I like the chancing point of views. It was exactly my cup of tea. Twisted and fucked up but with a great ending! I hope I will se more of Kyrie and Valintine.
