4.5 stars. This was a confronting book to read as news of the book bans come out of America. It follows 3 women at different points in time of WWII, each of their paths intersecting as their beliefs are challenged.

This is a romance book. I tried so hard to keep reading because I genuinely cared about the books and I love historical fiction. But this was about 3 women, and their love lives thinly veiled under the belief that the story was about censorship in the Nazi era. The censorship flits about the corners of love affairs so you can read about tongues in mouths and what happens between legs. I care about what the women do, not WHO they do.

This book was beautifully written. The messages and themes were very important, and I loved how everything was wrapped up in the end. I just didn't think the LGBT relationship was necessary.
