May I give this 6 stars, 7 stars? This book engaged and challenged me.  I have pages I want to re-read, maybe transcribe and keep to re-read.  The characters were to love and to dislike, to admire and to ponder their flaws.  As an avid reader of historical fiction the author notes were some of the best I've read.  And now I'm off to pick some next reads from the author's suggestions… and to find more by the author!

I started out thinking this was another enjoyable yet run of the mill WW2 historical fiction novel. The last few chapters, however, were outstanding. Labuskes drew strong parallels between past and (implied) present behaviors of willful ignorance, civic passivity, and megalomania, the likes of which we've seen too much of since 2016.
