This took me almost 5 months to complete. Not because it was boring or bad, but I could nog get myself to go on.

The second book of The Mortal Fates series had me obsessed! We don't get begging for forgiveness from Soren but we definitely get redemption. Soren and Rooke balance each other perfectly and the possessive nature of Soren rivals that of any high fae male. Complete with a cliffhanger ending, this book is well worth the read.
✔️ High fantasy
✔️ Dual pov
✔️ Political intrigue
✔️ Enemies to lovers
✔️ Very slow burn
✔️ Fated mates
✔️ Found family
During this second book in the Mortal fates series we learn more about Soren and why he acts the way he does.
We are introduced to more characters in this book. We all ready know Soren's family, but in this book we meet more of the Goblin family, Rooke's family and we learn more about Sari. We travel to different area's/castles in the Kingdom.
I enjoyed this book more then the first. The first book wasn't bad, I gave it 4⭐️, but I really enjoy seeing character/relationship development. In this story there is always a reason why, which makes the story more complete.

genre: epic fantasy / romantasy

rating: ★★★★ [4/5]
spice: explicit
Similar to its predecessor, the story is weaved slowly, adding more context to the lore and world building while still allowing some mystery around Rooke's background.
Rooke. What an absolutely wonderful FMC... smart, strong, fierce, compassionate, selfless.
I loved seeing her more feisty side and finally standing up to Soren for his mistreatment of her in the previous book. It was fun seeing this almost 180 degree of their roles reversed and while I would've enjoyed some groveling, the way it was handled ultimately made sense for Soren's character development.
Those last 10% were absolutely vicious, I could barely keep up with the new developments and information thrown at us with my eyes wide open and open-mouthed in confusion and awe. I did the mistake of finishing this book just before bed and legitimately could not process what I just read. Thankfully my friends who had already finished the book were just as eager to talk theories until sleep could not be evaded any longer.
But the real hero is the forest. It takes an amazing author to make me weep for what the forest yearns for and has lost. I wish we had a little less inner monologues and condensed the story a little more (+additional proofreading), other than that a truly great sequel.
J Bree is the Queen of cliffhangers.
One little pet peeve of mine is very similar names which does no good for any dyslexic reader. We have places called: Yregar, Yris, Yrell and Yrmont.
Which is just so confusing and forces me to flip back and forth between page and map. Oh, but it also continues : Tyton and Tauron, Nightspark and Northern Star, etc.
One last point I must make, while I usually overlook minor editing mistakes, this book could've really benefitted from an extra round of proofreading as some of the mistakes were very blatant ("magic sauce" instead of "magic source", etc.)
Spoiler: While the first book had zero spice, be prepared for the tension to finally hit steamy levels.
Some open questions:
-Who is the High Commander?
-What will happen to Sari?
-What do these terms mean: croi, donn, aefanya
-What else is Rooke hiding?

This book, oh man this book.
I loved this one a lot more than the first but that may be because it wrenched emotions from me over and over again. It made laugh, cry and shout WTF!!

I spoke too soon about Soren-hate from Pemba. WHAT THE FUCK.
How am I supposed to wait like this knowing the ending?

3.5 stars. Typos really took away from the story and was very distracting. However despite that, the storyline is definitely worth the read. It just needs a LOT of work from the editor. I was really looking forward to the story and it was kind of disappointing the way the book was handled. It felt like the second half of the book were really rushed.
