This is my first series by J. Bree and I did try holding off reading this because there's no release date for book 3 yet.
I failed miserably and started reading the series about a week ago starting with "The Scepter".
Also, I wasn't aware of the shitstorm regarding the book's release date.
I do understand that a sudden change of a release date is something very unpleasant to any reader but the content of a story and it's review should most definitely not be based on something like that.

"The Scepter" and "The Sword" were good introductions to the main story and I really enjoyed the first book as well as this one.
I have to agree though with some of the criticism voiced by other readers.
The editing of book 2 wasn't done as well as in book 1.

Rooke and Soren are great main characters with a lot of depth and I'm desperate to find out how their story is going to end. They both sacrificed so much in the past that I'd hate to this not having a happy end.

With this being book 2 out of 3 I did expect a lot more world building, new characters being introduced, more background story to the characters that had already been introduced without another big stand-off at the end of it. This is what's to come in book 3 and probably more than once.

Nonetheless, I must agree with other readers that revealing that Pemba has already died a few years ago was hard for me to grasp because I was waiting for the reunion of brother and sister. So, I can't help but wonder - why? I hope there will be a good reason for it to be revealed in book 3.

I also agree with most readers that Rooke made it far too easy for Soren. He deserved to be put on his knees a lot more.

What happened with the first kiss? I'm sorry to say but that was disappointing! There was not enough depth to that from my point of view.

I also kept wondering if their nicknames "croí" and "Donn" have a special meaning and if we are to find out at some point what they mean.

I'm eager to find out about Thea's background story and how Tauron and her are going to find to one another.

There will certainly be a lot of friction between Hanede and Soren and I'd love for a proper stand-off between those two.

The relation between Rooke and the Bloodwitches and the revelation of who her father really was, was a great revelation. I loved that and honestly I didn't see that one coming. To put that part at the end of book two - I'm not sure if that was a wise decision. To me it seemed a little too squeezed in there.

Anyway, overall, I really enjoyed the series so far and I'm looking forward to the third book very much.

Reading order:
1. The Scepter (prequel novella)
2. The Sword (prequel novella 2)
3. The Crown of Oaths and Curses (book 1)
4. The Throne of Oath and Blood (book 2)

I think it’s crucial to read the prequels before reading the main books in the series.

I enjoyed J. Bree’s The Bonds that Tie series, so I was excited for this one. Having finished all published books thus far (through TTOOAB — the last isn’t out yet)  I’m not sure that I would recommend this series to a friend.

Things I liked about this series:
This is a genuine enemies to lovers, forced proximity romance. The two main characters have grudges, mistrust, and hatred — yet they are fated to be married to each other to restore their kingdom. The reasons for their hatred are fleshed out in the prequels. The worldbuilding is interesting and fun. There are always battles or problems being thrown at them to solve.

Things I struggled with in this series:
Books 1 and 2 felt like they needed more editing and condensing. They’re both quite long (550-650 pages), and they suffered from some repetition or events happening that could have been combined with other events to move the plot forward in a more concise way. Book 2 suffers from quite a number of typos and mistakes in the second half, including changing POV pronouns (ex: I to he). There were also moments where I felt like the emotional stakes could have been raised (like when they return from Yris and nobody greets or acknowledges the baby), but the narrative simply moves forward.

There were a few reveals that seemed inconsistent with what we know about the characters. For example
Pemba is dead but we’ve never once heard Rooke mourn him, and she plans on dying to fulfill her fate yet we’ve never seen internal conflict over falling for Soren while knowing this?

The story is interesting and fun, but I don’t know that I’ll worry about finishing the series when the last book comes out. It just hasn’t captured my attention in the way that her other series did.

This book has a bunch of grammar errors and typos so if that sort of thing bothers you I highly recommend waiting until they do more edits. That being said my dyslexic self can ignore those easily and I usually don’t notice so my rating is not being affected by it.

I thoroughly enjoyed the story and am extremely excited for the next book, hopefully it will have a much smoother release.

I liked there was no groveling, but instead he used his actions to prove himself to her. I got kinda confused at the end of the book, and the last 30% of the book wasn’t as flushed out as the first half of the book. Still enjoyable!

I enjoyed the story as a whole but it definitely has some problems.

Rooke forgiving Soren due to ignorance was a cop out.
Soren did show through action that he cares for her but not enough groveling.

It felt rushed even at almost 700 pages.

The editing in part 2 was pretty rough. Missed words and formatting issues. I usually don’t mind this but it was pretty frequent.

I was able to read this more enjoyably than book 1 only because Rooke wasn’t being tortured this time around.
