A definite page turner! There is an underlying love story in this book that really touched me, a connection between two characters that ran deep. I was frustrated at times with Octavian, the male lead, the type of man who wants to do the right thing, even if it's the wrong thing, even if it will bring a different kind of suffering. But it also makes him more human, a man who wants to keep to his word. Of the two female leads, Sophie was my favorite. She began very innocent, as though the entire world had just been revealed to her and she was trying to figure it out, and it didn't take her long at all to realize how complicated it actually was and how much her heart could hurt in it. But she also realized how strong she was and didn't fear having to stand in the world on her own if she had to. I wasn't overly fond of Theresa, the married socialite who'd been bedding Octavian for the last two years, the way in which she called him her Boy, how I think she wanted to have her cake and eat it too. There was scheming, but not over the top. Theresa is still likeable, a woman you can understand why she does what she does and who deserves happiness. There is a mystery involving Sophie's family here too, a trial that is told through a social column, and a climax that is quite intense, but I kept turning pages for the love triangle, to find out who would end up with who.

I don't think I will finish this one. I started it a long time ago and just can't bring myself to pick it back up. And decided not to finish

Beatriz Williams does it again with another wonderful, fast-paced historical tale! I loved the story being told from the viewpoints of the 2 main women characters - one younger and one of "a certain age." I also love how the author continues to weave the Schuyler family into the story as well as some other references from her other books. Absolutely a great read!

Set in the roaring 20s, this is a story of a murder and the people involved in that murder, about 15 years later. There is also a side story of affairs and unwanted marriages. Theresa Marshall, a real beauty, is married and having an affair with "Boyo". Theresa's brother becomes engaged to a young woman, Sophie. Sophie's father, The Patent King, is a cold, reclusive man. Boyo is asked by Theresa to investigate Sophie and her family to be sure there is nothing in their past. As a result, there are many things that come to light. I found the novel to be plodding at times.

I feel like I need a shower after reading this book.
While I did love the atmosphere of 1920s NYC, this wasn't as enjoyable as some of her other books!

I was first drawn to this book by the lovely book cover. The next thing was the time period this story featured... the 1920's. I have really been intrigued by this era and getting my hands on new books that I come across that take place in this era.

As soon as I opened this book I was transported back in time. This is the best part about this book...the era. I was not immersed in the characters or their lives as much as I would have liked to be. In fact, for me I did not really see or experience a love triangle. Although, I thought that Octavian was good as was Sophie. Theresa was fine but I felt a brick wall between her and Octavian that they could not fully break down in their relationship. Despite not being in love with this book I did like what I read and would read more books by this author.
