this book was literally so hard to read the writing is in the form of fanfiction, at a 5th grade level, with zero depth or complexity

Super sad because I was so excited to read this book and had heard so many good things about it! Unfortunately the writing style just wasn’t for me and I wasn’t a fan of the pop culture references. It just felt very much like someone older trying too hard to write from the point of view of a teenager 😕

This book had so much potential, and it is disappointing that the author does not utilize it. The characters seem to follow tropes without any real commentary on how they got there.
There were no hints, or indicators that the characters are falling in love with each other, until they kiss.  It’s like they just decided it would be a good idea out of the blue.

I’m not a fan of the writing style of the characters. “ the world is mad cruel.” It sounds like he's trying too hard to appeal to teens.

This book does not have any real discernible climax or resolution. The events seem very random and don’t follow a theme or goal. The characters are flat and seem to make decisions to drive the plot of these random events, rather than reflect good character.

This book will not keep you up at night. It will not make you cry. However, it is perfect for making you tired before bed.

This book is really good for someone who enjoyed if he had been with me or if only I had told her, but wants less spice. I really enjoyed the characters and the plot was so sad but so joyous at the same time. Overall, this book was a really great read that left my heart in pieces once I finished it.

I hate to say this about a book I was so excited to start, but alas, I am disappointed. The concept by itself is very intriguing and brings out many questions within oneself; however, that is unfortunately not enough to salvage the book.

As someone who bawls her eyes out in practically every sad scene in existence, I was ready to get very emotionally attached and cry for maybe two hours straight. Instead, having put down the book just now, I feel nothing towards any of the characters. They all fell flat in my opinion, and because I didn't care about the characters, the story just kept on dragging. Rufus and Mateo practically had no chemistry, honestly, and even with all the emotions being high due to their approaching deaths, their love story still felt forced. The side characters whose POVs kept interrupting the story were nothing but a nuisance in my eyes and kept pulling me out while adding practically nothing to the story, maybe except the implied ending. The writing, especially the dialogues, was one of the most forced-feeling I've read in a while as well, which is a shame because I've heard nothing but praise for Silvera's style before.

Overall, I enjoyed the diversity, the point Silvera is trying to make, and the idea of what could have been. I wish the concept was explored more, but the way They Both Die at the End is just did not hit the spot for me.

2.5 stars.

I wish I had enjoyed this book more than I actually did. I’m thinking the audiobook factor might have had something to do with my experience, but I wasn’t emerged into their story at all. I really liked the concept of it, I just didn’t get attached to the characters as I wish I did. In other words, I just didn’t care one bit.

I was really expecting and ready to get my heart broken into a million pieces but then this book happened and now all I am is disappointed. There were so many things that did not make any sense to me.
The fact that the ending (they both die at the end, surprise) got me like “Oh well. Can I go get some pizza now?, says it all.

The rest of the reviews of this book make me feel heartless but man, what can I say, I was bored.
