3.5: readable and entertaining enough to reach for every night but no “oomph” to it. See liked review. Also very uncomfortable conversations about a 13 year old girl...why, it adds nothing to the plot? Especially when connecting said girl to his dead sister, and by extension his daughter..

4.5. Definitely a page turner - at no point could I ever predict what would happen next. I really like the way Murakami shapes his realities in a way that make you question your own reality. There were so many scenes that were definitely unrealistic, yet I wouldn’t go as far as to cal this book fantasy. He has a way of taking the absurd / supernatural and talk about them in such natural ways that you don’t really find yourself questioning it. I am still very confused on a lot that happened and felt that some of the parts (the idea / double metaphor etc) could have been tied in better but overall this book was very enrapturing. The supernatural elements makes me almost question if I made up what I read just as the main character questions what he experiences. It makes it better that at no point does he try to rationalize it but instead just let it fester and have its own agency. I think this may be my favorite Murakami book I’ve read and I am hoping to make sense more of some of the themes that were running throughout the book.

read this entire book while on vacation and it enhanced my time so much. love murakami (as always) and love murakami + art. a little on the fantastical side for me and a little too much talk of boobs but still a W.
There is something so comforting about Murakami’s prose, so much so that it can always overcome whatever shortcomings the particular novel has. This one has very very few. It’s classic Murakami. It doesn’t break new ground; is more of a greatest hits novel. It’s a book you curl up with, drinking good Scotch and listening to jazz, with a cat playfully rubbing against your leg.
Неожиданная книга. Неспешное повествование, но затянуло. Перехоже ко второй с предвкушением.
